1 Industrial Automation as a Cloud Service
Presented by: Alaa Eldin Abdelaal and Maram Sakr 8/24/2015

2 Outline Brief summary of the paper “ Industrial Automation as a Cloud Service”. Current automation architecture. Proposed architecture. Challenges with the new approach. Proposed solutions and the results. The wind turbine control system. The demo. 8/24/2015

3 Current automation system architecture
Programmable Logic Controller(PLC) Programmable Automation Controller (PAC) 8/24/2015

4 Proposed architecture
Cost saving up to 57% and time to start up reduction by up to 85%. 8/24/2015

5 challenges with the proposed architecture
Timeliness. Reliability. Security(Outside the scope). The paper addresses the L1 requirements 8/24/2015

6 Delay compensation 8/24/2015

7 Delay compensation results
Mean= 4 s, Standard Deviation= 2.8 s, max=20 s The delay compensator kept the controlled process from overshooting and from deviating from the final value. 8/24/2015

8 Fault tolerance This is done through the reliable cloud controller (RCC) algorithm that has some guarantees. 8/24/2015

9 RCC Guarantees G1 : If the primary controller fails, the secondary controller is automatically hot-swapped in. This guarantee is generalizable to higher redundancy. G2 : If the failed primary controller recovers, it takes over, forcing the secondary controller out of action. G3 : Handover of controllers is performed smoothly causing no undesirable transient response artifacts. 8/24/2015

10 Fault tolerance results

11 The previous demo Tank level control system One loop
Desktop HMI application The delay compensator and the fault tolerance work separately. 8/24/2015

12 The new system  Wind turbine control system that has:
Two control loops. Higher order systems. Delay compensator and fault tolerance integrated together. Web based HMI. 8/24/2015

13 Wind turbine control system
Wind Turbines are now considered one of the main sources of renewable energy. The main idea of a wind turbine is to convert the energy of the wind into electrical power. To achieve a high efficiency, control systems are used in different parts of the wind turbine. In our work, two control systems are considered; the yaw control system and the rotor speed control system. 8/24/2015

14 The yaw control system The main purpose of this system is to change the direction of the wind turbine as a whole based on the direction of the wind. 8/24/2015

15 The rotor speed control system
This control system is used to regulate the rotation speed of the wind turbine blades, i.e. the rotor speed, by controlling their angle of attack (pitch angle). 8/24/2015

16 Wind speed versus generated power
In the below rated area(region I) Power optimization In the above rated area (region II) Power Limitation 8/24/2015

17 The demo The primary controllers are in a VM in Singapore.
The secondary controllers are in a VM in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The emulated plant in Vancouver. The HMI is accessible through the web. 8/24/2015

18 Thank you  8/24/2015
