1 Welcome Wednesday 29th March 2017 Maths Parent Workshop

2 The National Curriculum

3 Addition and Subtraction
Children are required to: Add and subtract numbers with more than 4 digits using formal written methods of addition and subtraction. Addition Key points: Line the digits up underneath each other, starting from the right Always show the operation sign Keep a note of any regrouping underneath the calculation 4 9 7 6 + 2 1 8 3 5 ‘Regrouping’ is what we call the process of ‘carrying’ or ‘exchanging’ a digit to help in performing the calculation.

4 Addition and Subtraction
Children are required to: Add and subtract numbers with more than 4 digits using formal written methods of addition and subtraction. Key points: Line the digits up underneath each other, starting from the right Always show which operation you are performing Keep a note of any regrouping on the relevant line Remember to write the new value of the digit which has been used for regrouping Subtraction 5 3 2 8 - 1 7 9 5 3 2 8 - 1 7 9 1 2 1 1

5 Addition and Subtraction
Children are required to: Add and subtract numbers with more than 4 digits using formal written methods of addition and subtraction. As well as asking children to perform the basic calculations, we expect them to be able to apply their knowledge to questions asked in different ways (such as a,b and c below) and to reasoning and problem solving questions such as e and f. Add four thousand seven hundred and thirty two to fifty three thousand three hundred and seven (Addition) What is the difference between 98,464 and 13,279? (Subtraction) Find the sum of 2,761 and 4,960. (Addition) Arnav earns £12,161 in 2014, £13,129 in 2015 and £14,674 in How much has he earnt altogether? (Addition) Find the missing number: 53,161 + ____________ = 79,537 Explain what is wrong with the following statement: 89,525 is 10,009 smaller than 99,524.

6 Let’s check it using our knowledge of place value:
Multiplication In year 5, children are expected to multiply 4 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers and 4 digit numbers by 2 digit numbers using formal methods. Let’s calculate 315 x 5: Let’s check it using our knowledge of place value: 5 x 5 = 25 5 x 10 = 50 5 x 300 = 1,500 ,500 = 1,575 3 1 5 x 7 2

7 Remember to use your knowledge of place value.
Let’s calculate 612 x 24 Remember to use your knowledge of place value. 2 x 612 = 1,224 20 x 612 = 12,240 6 1 2 x 4 8

8 They are also required to solve word problems involving multiplication and divide numbers in context (including multiples, factors, squared and cubed numbers. They may also be asked to apply their knowledge to find missing numbers in a calculation. Karina runs 132 miles in a week. How many miles does she run in 6 weeks?

9 Division By the end of the year, children in Year 5 are expected to be able to divide 4 digit numbers by 1 digit.

10 So far we have always used remainders
So far we have always used remainders. However, we can share the remainders out as well and turn them into decimals. 4 1 6 .2 5321 ÷ 5 = 5 1 3 2 How many 5s go into 5? 1 with 0 left over Think of it like money. Once you have shared out the pounds you can move on to share out the pence. Once you have shared out the whole numbers then you can share out the decimals. How many 5s go into 3? 0 with 3 left over How many 5s go into 32? 6 with 2 left over How many 5s go into 21? 4 with 1 left over How many 5s go into 10? 2 with 0 left over

11 Thank you Thank you for joining us, if you have any questions, please do come and speak to any on the year 5 team.
