1 We have been seeing a lot of circular diagram lately:
Light energy Photosynthesis CO2 Glucose H2O O2 Cellular Respiration ATP Energy

2 Why are we seeing so many circular diagrams?

3 Because matter is recycled by living things.
Light energy Photosynthesis CO2 Glucose H2O O2 Cellular Respiration ATP Energy

4 Matter CO2 Glucose H2O O2 Anything made from atoms.

5 This planet has received no new atoms since its formation 4
This planet has received no new atoms since its formation 4.5 billion years ago. Atom Delivery

6 Instead, matter cycles between the living and nonliving parts of the environment.
Nonliving (air) Living (wood)

7 Matter is able to cycle because atoms are not created or destroyed during chemical reactions; only the bonds change.

8 Chemical reaction BIO GEO Nonliving (air) Living (wood) BIO GEO CHEMICAL CYCLE Chemical reaction

9 Biogeochemical Cycle BIO GEO Nonliving (air) Living (wood) The constant cycling of matter between living and nonliving things; driven by chemical reactions.

10 2 biogeochemical cycles we will cover:
Carbon Nitrogen How much matter is there at each point in the cycle? How does matter move from one part of the cycle to another? How does a change in one part of a cycle affect another part of the cycle?

11 The Carbon Cycle The biogeochemical cycling of carbon atoms; driven by photosynthesis, cellular respiration and other reactions.

12 Carbon must cycle through an ecosystem because living things need it to build organic molecules.

13 Bio (living) or Geo (nonliving)?
Forms of carbon Common name Chemical Formula Where it’s found Bio (living) or Geo (nonliving)? Carbon dioxide gas CO2 Atmosphere/air Geo

21 You will notice that the carbon cycle is roughly diamond-shaped, since most of the arrows are either pointing to the atmosphere or the ground.

22 The atmosphere and the ground are known as carbon “sinks,” since they contain the most carbon atoms.

23 Since all points in the carbon cycle are connected, a change at one point can effect many other points in the cycle.

24 Which part of the carbon cycle has changed over the last 100-150 years?

25 Burning coal  more CO2 in the atmosphere  more carbonic acid in the oceans.

26 Some of the carbonic acid in the ocean is absorbed by marine organisms to make shell…but not all of it.

27 The extra carbonic acid causes the ocean to become too acidic to support life.

28 X

29 Another part of the carbon cycle that is changing:

30 Normally, plants remove CO2 from the atmosphere through the process of photosynthesis.

31 However, this keeps happening:

32 Fewer plants  less photosynthesis  more CO2 in the atmosphere
X

33 Too much CO2 gas in the atmosphere is dangerous because CO2 traps heat, leading to global warming.
Earth

34 If global warming continues, humans will die
If global warming continues, humans will die. Ironically, this will eventually restore balance to the carbon cycle. X
