1 Digital Illustration Chapter 6 File format

2 Image format organizing and storing digital images.
Image files are composed of either pixels, vector (geometric) data, or a combination of the two the files are rasterized to pixels when displayed on most graphic displays.

3 Image format raster image -where the data describes the characteristics of each individual pixel vector image-contain a geometric description which can be rendered smoothly at any desired display size At some point, all vector graphics must be rasterized in order to be displayed on digital monitors

4 Image format for Vector
.AI (Adobe® Illustrator™) .EPS vector files (Encapsulated PostScript) .PDF (Portable Document Format) .SVG vector files (Scalable Vector Graphics) .CDR (Corel Draw)  .WMF/EMF (Windows MetaFile/Enhanced MetaFile)

5 .AI (Adobe® Illustrator™)
AI is an Adobe Illustrator file one of the most widely used graphic design programs in the world. a file with the tag AI is an original design file only be opened successfully using the Adobe Illustrator program

6 .EPS vector files (Encapsulated PostScript)
contain both vector and bitmap data. PostScript is the universal language used by computer printers as well as professional printers. is the best file to give to a professional printer for reproducing your logo on the printed page. Visual identification elements, such as logos, are best to be saved in this format. It generic vector format and the option of choice to place the file into non-Adobe program

7 .PDF (Portable Document Format)
It support documents containing bitmap and vector graphics, text and font. To preserve editability, be sure to enable the Preserve Illustration Editing Capabilities option in the Save Adobe PDF dialog box. often used for printing and especially digital printing.

8 .SVG vector files (Scalable Vector Graphics)
Adobe® describes SVG as the "next generation of data-driven, interactive, and personalized graphics on the web" SVGZ is the compressed version. A vector file format created with the Internet in mind and supported by Internet browsers is an open standard created and developed by the World Wide Web Consortium to address the need for a versatile, scriptable and all-purpose vector format for the web and otherwise. Because of its scripting potential, SVG is a key component in web application: interactive web pages that look and act like applications.

9 .CDR (Corel Draw) A CDR generally can only be successfully opened in the Corel Draw suite of applications. CDR is favoured by signmakers and embroidery stitchers.

10 .WMF/EMF (Windows MetaFile/Enhanced MetaFile)
A Microsoft-created graphics file format containing both bitmaps and vectors. Rarely used on an everyday basis and unappreciated. I recommend using EMF files for any vector graphics elements placed in Microsoft Office documents (Word, PowerPoint etc.). A, say, logo positioned in this way will look good on the screen but – what is more important – it will always be printed in the best available quality.

11 Other Image Format .PSD (Photoshop Document)
.GIF (Graphic Interchange Format) .JPEG (Joint Photographic Expert Group) .PNG (Portable Network Graphic)

12 .PSD (Photoshop Document)
is PSD, which is saved by the most popular raster graphics program, Adobe Photoshop.

13 .GIF (Graphic Interchange Format)
Best for images with large flat areas colour Support up to 256 colour Support animation and background tranparency

14 .JPEG (Joint Photographic Expert Group)
Best for photo and graphic with gradient blend Support 16.7million colour Do not support transparency or animation

15 .PNG (Portable Network Graphic)
Best for images with large flat areas colour A replacement for .GIF image for newest web browser PNG-8 support 256 colour, PNG-24 support million colour and background transparency.

16 Correcting and avoiding printing problems
First Make sure placed images are linked properly Font need to print the document are loaded Second Check any complex object in the document (object with many points, compound masks or shapes or gradient mesh) Save as copy(to retain the original file), remove the complex object If using transparency Preview artwork(using Flattener Preview) Setting the Flattener and transparency
