2 Aladdin What is the history of Aladdin in literature?
Questions to answer: What is the history of Aladdin in literature? Who wrote the play? (provide background information) How relevant is this play to modern day persons?

3 What is the history of Aladdin in literature?
We all know where Aladdin (the play) derived from.

4 What is the history of Aladdin in literature?
You’ll be surprised to know that Aladdin was not originally set in the Middle East…. Aladdin was originally a story from …. (drum roll, please)…

5 What is the history of Aladdin in literature?
The FAMOUS collection – Sir Richard Burton’s The Arabian Nights Scheherazade’s One Thousand and One Nights Scheherazade survived by telling stories to the sultan in order to escape death. -inventor of the “cliffhanger”

6 What is the history of Aladdin in literature?
Okay, so where does Aladdin (that is, the story) come from? Not from the One Thousand and One Nights. Or at least, not really. We associate it with that collection because the story has been added to the Nights in translation as a sort of honorary extra tale (or ‘orphan tale’). The Aladdin story was added to the collection by a French translator, Antoine Galland, in the early eighteenth century. Although Galland heard the tale from an Arabian storyteller, the Aladdin story is firmly set in China (so not the Middle East at all, but the Far East). The tale had nothing to do with the original One Thousand and One Nights tales, and doesn’t appear in any of the manuscripts. But, since Galland added it to his version, it has become arguably the most famous story (not) in the Arabian Nights.

7 What is the history of Aladdin in literature?
The reason we think of the story as one of the true-born Arabian Nights is that many of the characters in the tale of Aladdin are Arabian Muslims with Arabic names. But Aladdin is Chinese … at least, he is if you go back to the known origins of the story. In the original story, Aladdin’s love-interest is called Badroulbadour (the name means ‘full moon of full moons’ in Arabic).

8 What is the history of Aladdin in literature?
AGAIN Badroulbadou NOT Jasmine.. Disney completely made up the name Jasmine… I wonder why?

9 Who wrote the play? Jim Luigs Playwright
He adapted the book and wrote additional lyrics for the musical,DISNEY'S ALADDIN JUNIOR. Regionally, his plays and musicals have been commissioned and/or produced by Actors Theatre of Louisville, ACT (Seattle), Asolo Theatre (Sarasota), Center Stage Dallas Theatre Center, George Street Playhouse and Goodspeed-at-Chester, among others.

10 How relevant is this play/ musical to modern day persons?
DISNEY is extremely popular Aladdin Jr. explores topics that are relevant to today’s youth. Honesty, Integrity, and CORRUPT GOVERNMENT theories Plays and Musicals are a BOOMING business Despite the fact that most of you don’t attend plays outside of a school setting.

11 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS/ Prompts
EXPLAIN the similarities between the musical and the Disney film (if you’ve seen it). How are they different? WHY are the songs different from the movie? DO YOU BELIEVE today’s youth would respond better (like) to the musical versus the film or story? Support your argument.

12 EXPLAIN the similarities between the musical and the Disney film (if you’ve seen it). How are they different? They have the same characters. This is important to establish a familiar story that makes understanding the new concept integral. The story line is basically the same…giving the audience a familiar story from a different perspective or medium. The most obvious difference is that the play is live and in real time. At any moment something fascinating could happen- it isn’t always planned to go well!

13 WHY are the songs different from the movie?

14 DO YOU BELIEVE today’s youth would respond better (like) to the musical versus the film or story? Support your argument. I believe that from a technical aspect today’s youth would appreciate the musical far more than the movie or just the story. Theatre has many components. It is also very fun to work on a play! There’s set design, costume design, lighting design, sound design, set building, prop building, acting, singing, AND the most important of all feeling included and being appreciated/recognized for your contribution.

15 The End.
