The patient should look up to prevent the medication from first “hitting“ the cornea, which stimulates tearing and dilutes the medication. One drop of solution or a “match head“ amount of ointment should be placed in the inferior cul-de-sac, without touching the bottle to the lashes or eyelids (to prevent contamination).
