2 Background Efficient Transportation has remained a Mirage despite previous efforts by concerned bodies. (2012 IBM commuter pain index ranked Nairobi the 4th most congested city globally) Nairobi Metropolitan area Controls Over 50% of Kenya's GDP and it is estimated that USD. 1 Billion is lost annually due to congestion.

3 on in the NMA include:- Some of the major transport problems and challenges in Nairobi Metropolitan Area include – Inadequate integration of Land use Planning and transport planning Inefficient and inadequate Public Transport(PT) to meet the rising demand (disorganized & Free for all) High cost of transport compared to levels of income in the region Uncoordinated and unsynchronized efforts by the various bodies concerned with transport Inadequate development of non-motorised infrastructure network, Poor safety and high incidence of motor traffic accidents, Increased pollution and deterioration of the urban environment.

8 Why NaMATA Efficient transport system is critical to lowering the costs of doing business and increasing the competitiveness of Kenyan products both on the domestic, regional and international markets. Efficient transport system is a pre- requisite for achievement of Vision 2030

9 Why NaMATA 2017- NaMATA is established
To solve the transport problem in the NMA, Deliberate efforts have been done, among them, Integrated National Transport Policy, which recommended the establishment of NaMATA 2017- NaMATA is established To oversee the establishment of an integrated, efficient, effective and sustainable public transport system within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area(NMA)

11 Short Term Cross- City Routes Gazetting and rolling out of Cross-City PSV Routes for high capacity buses. CBD Traffic Management Review On-street parking Arrangements Review traffic Flow within the CBD Introduction of a Congestation Fee foe for private Cars Enforcement of 5 minute rule at bus stop and 40 minute at termini County by-laws Enhanced Enforcement Cordinate Efforts by Traffic police, NTSA, NCC

13 Medium Term Dedicated Bus Lanes Corridors with more than 2 lanes per direction to dedicate a single lane for Buses only Enhancement of Existing Facilities Integrate the various modes for seamless connectivity ie Rail-Road-NMT Improve NMT Facilities ie walkways, Crossings either at grade or grade separated Redesign selected Junctions Improve Traffic Signaling Clear and adequate signage ITS introduction in Nairobi (with NCC/KURA) Park and Ride Develop Park + Ride Facilities on the 4 Major Corridors to Nairobi

A public transport network is far more than a collection of uncoordinated routes and modes public transport should be planned as an overall network which provides convenient, multi- directional and seamless travel to a wide range of passenger groups

22 Summary NaMATA aims at The development of an integrated transport strategy Effective integration of land use and transport planning The planning, delivery and management of an integrated public transport strategy A Mass transit system incorporating commuter rail and BRT Establishment of a comprehensive traffic management strategy Establishment of a comprehensive parking management strategy Improvements in road user management including traffic control and enforcement of road rules
