Using up of goods or services. Some things are consumed numerous times daily (Food); whereas some consumption may last for a long while. (Clothing) Thousands spent yearly on consumption. Developed Countries What do you think are some things you may see in developed countries? Wealthy/established countries. United States Developing Countries India

4 Consumption Depends on…
Developed Countries People flock to the urban areas or suburban areas Government provides: Public schools, fire protection, & safe drinking water. People as a whole earn pretty good money. More wages= more consumption Developing Countries Trying to develop their economies. Building up a strong agriculture base Wages much lower= less consumption; less production.

5 Remember…. When PRICES go up, DEMAND goes down, SUPPLY goes up.
When PRICES go down, DEMAND goes up, SUPPLY goes down.

6 Goods vs. Services Goods Services
Things that are produced for sale or use. Examples: Food, clothing, Xbox’s Services Tasks done by some people for other people. Teachers, Hair Stylists, Therapists GOODS + SERVICES= GDP GOODS + SERVICES / POPULATION = PER CAPITA GDP

7 Food Consumption Plenty of food on this planet for everyone; distribution of that food is the issue. U.S. Consumes about 3,300 calories per day on average. Healthy lives usually requires about 2,700 calories per day. Poverty leads to Hunger What is poverty? ??? India- largest number of poverty people. Largest number of people in hunger.

8 Oil Consumption Patterns
Oil is a FOSSIL FUEL that has many uses. What does oil do? Can be refined into gasoline for your cars. Used to make asphalt for roads. Helps assist in plastic creation. United States leads the world in oil consumption. Think about all of our airports and automobiles. We consume about 25% of the world’s oil allotment.

9 Technology & Consumption
What is technology? How do we use our technology? 75% of Americans use a computer or the Internet on a daily basis. How many of you have computers? How often a day are you on those computers? Do you think this is a strong link between developing countries and their computer usage? Where would we be without our computers?

10 World’s Greatest Producers
Education Public education system. Most young people graduate from high school. About half of those individuals then go off to college. The other half typically go into the American workforce. Work Ethic “American dream” If you work hard, you can achieve anything you want to achieve. Long hours Most people work a standard 40-hr week.

11 Consumption Consumption often leads to worsening the environment.
How can this be avoided? 1) Cut back on waste. Most people buy more food than they need. Electricity; how can we limit this? 2) Find ways to do more with less. Search for the little things in life 3) Use cleaner resources. Solar power; wind power, etc. 4) Recycle. Reduces trash and saves resources.
