Sports in Lebanon We have been finding out about different sports that are popular in Lebanon. By Alex, Nicholas and Katie

2 Because of the geography in Lebanon, you can take part in Summer and Winter sports on the same day.

3 Football Football is the most popular sport in Lebanon.
Their national team is ‘Lebanon’ and their nickname is the ‘Cedars’. There are 178 football clubs. They are in the Guinness book of records. The Al Ansar club won 11 consecutive league games between 1988 and 1999 By Alex and Nicholas

4 Hiking and mountain biking
Hiking, trekking and mountain biking are popular sports in the summer .You can go to the top of the mountain in a ski lift. You can see as far as, Cyprus to the west and Syria to the east. The Lebanon Mountain Trail is Lebanon’s first national long-distance hiking trail that covers 440 km and passes through 75 villages, starting in the north and trecking over the top of Mount Lebanon. 5 Basketball Basketball is one of the most popular sports in Lebanon.
There are many successful clubs. The Lebanese basketball league was founded in 1949 The most successful Lebanese basketball clubs are Sporting Al Riyadi Beirut and Sagesse The Lebanese team is ranked 24th in the world.

6 Skiing In the winter, skiing is a very popular sport in Lebanon.
There are many ski resorts along the top of the Mount Lebanon mountain range. The slopes range from 1700m-3000m above sea level. At the highest points you can see the Mediterranean sea. The biggest resort is Faraya Mzaar with 42 slopes and 50 miles of ski track. The season runs from December to April

7 Rock climbing and caving
Rock climbing, and caving are also sports practiced across Mount Lebanon.

8 Watersports: Windsurfing, kitesurfing
There is 225km of coastline stretching from the north to south of Lebanon. The beach season runs from April to October, perfect for water sports If you are looking for adventure, you will find diving, waterskiing, sailing, windsurfing, jet skiing, paragliding, and much more along the coast.

9 Scuba diving A 600 meter deep underwater valley runs from Beirut to the Bay of Jounieh, creating interesting rock formations for divers to explore. Another popular diving area is at Chikka (near Tripoli). Exploring the underwater ruins near Jbail (Byblos), Saida (Sidon), and Sour (Tyre) is another popular activity for divers and snorkelers. There are also several shipwreck sites, including “le Souffleur” (a French submarine from World War II) near Khaldé.

10 Kayaking It is fun to go Kayaking along the Lebanese rivers, Nahr Litani and Nahr Ibrahim. You can stay in a campsite close by.

11 Canyoning Canyoning is travelling in canyons using a variety of techniques. These include a mix of walking, scrambling, climbing, swimming, jumping, tobogganing and abseiling. You can visit the Jezzine canyon, where there are narrow gorges and spectacular walls.
