1 Matter & It’s Properties
Lesson 1

2 The Importance of Physical Properties
Physical properties are characteristics of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substance What are the physical properties of these bouncy balls? What do I… Hear Smell See Feel Taste

3 Mass is a Physical Property!
Mass is the amount of matter in an object. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. This carrot is made of matter and has mass!

4 Mass Which object has more mass? OR
Before you answer.. Which one takes up more space?

5 Weight Weight is the measure of the pull of gravity on an object.
Both cubes have the same amount of mass. Which cube has more weight? The Styrofoam cube OR the metal cube? OR

6 Volume Volume is the amount of space that an object takes up.
How can volume be measured? Volume can be calculated by this formula: Length x width x height = Volume

7 Density Density is the concentration of matter in an object.

8 Mixture vs. Solution A mixture is a combination of two or more different kinds of matter. A solution is a type of mixture in which particles of the two substances are mixed. Solubility- the ability to be dissolved.

9 Changes in State Lesson 2

10 Solid, Liquid and Gas Feels firm when you touch it because the particles that make it are packed tightly together. Liquid particles move freely enough to slide past one another. That way, they can change shape! Particles are far apart and move the fastest. They are able to float to the top and escape into the air

11 Evaporation & Precipitation
Evaporation occurs when particles escape from a non-boiling liquid and become a gas Precipitation occurs when liquid or solid water (snow) particles fall from the atmosphere and reach the Earth.

12 Condensation Condensation changes a substance from a gas to a liquid.
Think of a cold glass of water on a hot day.. Water vapor in the air is cooled on the surface of the glass. It condenses and then forms water drops.

13 Freezing & Boiling Boiling point of water is 212 F
Freezing point of water is 32 F

14 Melting Different substances melt and boil at different temperatures.

15 Changes in Matter Lesson 3

16 Physical & Chemical Changes
Physical Change: When matter changes size, shape or form to = Physical Change to

17 Physical & Chemical Change
Chemical Change: When the substances that make up an object are changed and made into other substances. to = chemical change to

18 Examples of a Physical Change
Piece of paper ---- Rip It ---- Still a Piece of paper

19 Examples of a Chemical Change
Perhaps you have found a half eaten apple that turns brown.  The reason is that a chemical change has occurs when food spoils.

20 Examples of a Chemical Change
The explosion of fireworks is an example of chemical change

21 Clues that a Chemical Change Happened
Odor Changes It only takes one experience with a rotten egg to learn that they smell different that fresh eggs.  When eggs and food spoil, they undergo a chemical change.  The change in odor is a clue to the chemical change

22 Clues that a Chemical Change Happened
Production of Gases The formation of a gas is a clue to chemical changes.  The bubbles of gas that you observed form when an antacid is dropped into water is an example of change.

23 Clues that a Chemical Change Happened
Energy - Absorbed or Released Another sign of a chemical change is the release or gain of energy by an object.  Many substances absorb energy to undergo a chemical change.  Energy is absorbed during chemical changes involved in cooking, like baking a cake.

24 Play the Game! Lets test how much you know about Physical and Chemical changes! ds/ChangeLab.swf

25 REACTIVITY! When a substance reacts chemically to another substance
Potassium & Water Mercury & Corn Syrup

26 Combustibility The chemical property of being able to burn.
Easily Burned Not Easily Burned
