2 Why Dialectical Journals?
Allow a reader to record a mental conversation with a text. Student can use these journals to: Summarize a text Pose questions Read closely for details, images, diction, etc. Notice patterns and make connections Connect techniques to purpose, effect, and meaning Choose appropriate evidence Document quotations Make inferences about characters, symbols, etc. Write analysis justifying assertion

3 Purpose? To help students document their thoughts about a text and to transfer these thoughts into their writing in an organized, coherent manner. Make the link between thoughts and writing Organized, coherent manner Make the link between device and thematic meaning more concrete Preparation for: Class discussions Writing analytical essays Taking exams

4 Requirements of Journal
READ the text There must be: (per passage or chapter) 3 inference questions 5 pieces of evidence with inferences and commentary Page numbers At least 2 sentences of commentary for each piece of evidence Begin a new passage on a new page You will be allowed to use the journal on your final essay exam for the semester, so take the time to do this right.
