1 DEVELOPMENT OF AN INSTRUMENT TO ASSESS THE WOMAN’S POSTNATAL NEEDS
Anne Marie Weissheimer Escola de Enfermagem - Univ. Federal do Rio Grande do Sul PROBLEM Low quality of care delivered to women during the postnatal period in relation to contraception, sexual resumption, sexually transmitted infections, perineal care, breastfeeding, social support, baby care, and others. Home visits vs. Basic Health Units. POPULATION Women at the postpartum period (7-10 days; days; 6 months; 1 year). INTERVENTION The development and validation of a scale to measure and assess the postnatal needs of women during their first year after childbirth (7-10 days; days; 6 months; 1 year). The domains of the scale will be generated through focus groups with postpartum women, health professionals and with the use of literature review. COMPARISION Women whose needs are not measured or assessed by the scale (that is, standardized postnatal care actually delivered to women after childbirth). OUTCOME Assessment of the women’s needs during the postpartum period that could lead to an integral postnatal care. INTRODUCTION Human pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum are physiological events on a woman’s life cycle, but some factors have influence on the human postnatal period, including physical, psychological and socioeconomic matters1. Antenatal and childbirth care are well covered. In Brazil, the responsibility of postnatal care lies mainly on the woman’s shoulders at a moment of adjustment to motherhood and much more. Home Visits versus Basic Health Units. Perceived Risk versus Measured Risk. Depression  EPDS2. Quality of Life  Mother Generated Index3; Childbirth Perception Scale4. Research question: What are the women’s needs during the postpartum period that could lead to an integral postnatal care? OBJECTIVES Primary - To develop an instrument that assesses the postnatal needs of women during their first year after childbirth (at 7-10 days; days; 6 months; 1 year). Secondary - To measure and validate the psychometric properties of the developed instrument. - To translate and adapt the instrument so it can be used both in Brazil and in the United Kingdom. METHODS A methodological study following the steps proposed by Streiner and Norman5. Domains will be generated through focus groups and literature review. Psychometric properties tested: content validity, reliability (internal consistency and stability) . Statistical analysis. Ethical aspects.
