promoting Occupational Physiotherapy using a business based argument.

3 Overview Sources of information Calculations Target audiences

4 Sources of information
Businesses own figures – with pre and post intervention comparisons ( produced by business) Businesses own figures – with pre and post intervention comparisons ( verified by business) Industry specific absence figures Standardised absence figures by condition Strength of case

5 Business own figures Days lost per individual (Year 1 Vs year 2)
Number of days lost as a business due to MSDs (Trend) Days lost per MSD episode (Trend) Business case very strong Very unlikely to obtain this information if this is a new service proposal

6 Own figures calculation
Per employee (No. of days absence in the year pre – No. of days absence in the year post ) x daily rate Cost of Intervention 50-15 x 100 or = Spend £500 to save £3500 Return on investment = 700% or 7:1 *Repeat this for all employees using the service who have had at least one year post Rx

7

8 Client’s own MSD absence figures

9 Length of episode per MSD
Use real figures to extrapolate potential savings over a year Average length of episode pre service - Average length of episode post service Multiplied by the average daily rate Multiplied by the number of employees Multiplied by the MSD absence rate for that industry sector Example 17 days – 11 days x £100 = £600 X 1000= £600,000 x 4% = £24000/ year Very useful if you only have a short pilot to prove the cost benefit.

10 Industry specific absence figures

11 Key points - taster Average number of days lost per year – 7.7 days (public sector 9.6) Average annual cost £600 (public sector £889) Call centres record highest absence in private sector days per employee per year Transport distribution and storage- 2nd highest in private sector 9.4 days per employee per year You can divide the average days lost by the cost of absence to give a cost per day- £78 from above. All figures are in theses reports

12 Think about Larger organisations report higher absence rates
Large organisations are more likely to record absence rates 44% of organisations benchmark their absence against other employers

13 Standardised absence figures by condition-

14 Reed Group’s MDGuidelines has set the industry standard for return-to-work guidelines, enabling health care providers, case managers, and employers to efficiently access, communicate, and manage recommended treatment plans and disability durations for disabled employees. Based on the world’s deepest database of over 2 million disability cases Reed Group’s return-to-work product, MDGuidelines, is the result of rigorous statistical analysis.

15 How to use the MDA Calculate the average length of absence for the condition in question Establish the following Date absence began Date treatment started Date returned to work Compare MDA predicted absence with actual absence Multiply days saved by average absence cost Very useful if you only have a short pilot to prove the cost benefit and the employer has no absence recording facility.

16 Indirect business benefits
Patient satisfaction questionnaire Customer satisfaction questionnaire Industry awards HR, Insurance examples of industry awards

17 Non financials- Satisfaction Qs
