The Friends of the Hillsdale Library present the Hillsdale Film Festival 2017 Fall Foreign Film Series at the Hillsdale Free Public Library Antonia’s Line (Netherlands) September 25 – 7pm A 1995 "feminist fairy tale,” tells the story of the independent Antonia who, after returning to the Dutch village of her birth, establishes and nurtures a close-knit matriarchal community She looks back upon her life and the generations of family and friends who have gathered around her table. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Rated R. (Running Time 104 minutes) Son of Saul (Hungary) October 30 – 7pm This 2015 drama details two days in the life of Saul, a Hungarian Jewish prisoner working as a Sonderkommando at an Auschwitz Crematorium who finds the corpse of a boy he takes for his son and tries to carry out his impossible deed: save the body and find a rabbi to bury it, all while the Sonderkommando plan their own rebellion. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Rated R. (Running time 107 minutes) Central Station (Brazil) November 27 – 7pm This 1998 film follows the emotive journey of a former school teacher, who writes letters for illiterate people at Rio de Janeiro's central station, and a young boy whose mother has just died, in search for the father he never knew. Winner of the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language film. Rated R. (Running tome – 113 minutes.) The Umbrellas of Cherbourg(France) December 18 – 7pm Long before La La Land, this 1964 musical used color and song to tell the story of young lovers. This is the film that introduced Catherine Deneuve to American audiences. Winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Unrated. (Running time – 91 minutes) Classic movies and newer releases on the big screen with surround sound and an audience…..the way movies were meant to be seen!
