Accelerated Career Pathways Amarillo College

2 Student success at Amarillo college
2011 the Access Division at AC was renamed the Academic Success Division 2011 AC Joined the Achieving the Dream consortium 2011 No Limits / No Excuses Amarillo received a Partnership for Postsecondary Success grant, a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Grant 2012 AC became the first higher education institution to join No Excuses University network

2012 AC was awarded Partner Grants through No Limits/No Excuses Amarillo 2012 AC received a DOL TAACCCT Grant to create Accelerated Career Pathways AC piloted the I-BEST approach with one healthcare program and 4 technical programs 2014 AC became an Achieving the Dream Leader College

4 DOL TAACCCT Grant Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Act – Community College and Career Training Grant A 4-year grant, with Round 2 grants running from October 2012 through September 2016.

5 DOL TAACCCT Grant In addition to competitive grant awards, each state was given a $2.5 million grant for a single (non-consortium) community college. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board selected Amarillo College to receive this grant award for the state of Texas.

Evidence-Based Design (data driven quality improvement) Stacked and Latticed Credentials (options for further training) Online and Technology-Enabled Learning (simulators, etc.) Transferability and Articulation

8 Accelerated Healthcare Programs
Two existing programs implemented redesign elements in 2013: Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) – continuing education Phlebotomy – continuing education

9 Accelerated Healthcare Programs
Three new programs created for Fall 2014: Patient Care Technician – continuing education EKG Technician – continuing ed. Clinical Medical Assistant – academic credit program (Level I certificate, 2 semesters)

10 Non-healthcare Accelerated Programs
Professional Truck Driving – continuing ed. Diesel Mechanics – academic credit Utility Power Worker – academic credit Machining Technician – academic credit Industrial Technology– academic credit

11 Strategies for acceleration at AC
Time: Training programs from 5 weeks to 2 years in length that result in credentials and/or licensing in industry-specific fields Technology: Online learning segments and simulated technology that allow students to progress rapidly and build hands-on competencies

12 Strategies for acceleration at AC
Integrated Skills Training: Strengthening adult basic education skills by contextualizing English and math skills with core content study materials. Study Support: Supplemental instructors available for tutoring and small group study sessions outside of class, as needed.

Include instruction on job readiness skills: the job search process completing job applications resume writing practice interviews

14 strategies for finding/keeping a job
Include instruction on other “Soft Skills” employers want: communication skills work ethic problem solving skills teamwork customer relations

15 Offering Alternative career pathways in healthcare
Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) is an entry point for students who: Cannot attend college full time Do not score high enough on the TSI to enroll in academic courses Want to enter employment as soon as possible Need evening or weekend class options due to work conflicts Want to explore working in healthcare before making a longer term training commitment

16 Offering Alternative career pathways in healthcare
Students who complete the CNA program and pass the State of Texas CNA certification exam now have a new set of options: Find a job as a CNA. Enroll in another continuing healthcare education course at AC (Phlebotomy, EKG Technician, Patient Care Technician). Enroll in academic courses at AC that lead to LVN or ADN. Find a job and enroll in courses at AC.

Pathways that students may choose include: CNA  Phlebotomy  Patient Care Tech Phlebotomy  EKG Tech  Patient Care Tech CNA  Patient Care Tech  Clinical Medical Assistant  Licensed Vocational Nurse Patient Care Tech  Licensed Vocational Nurse  Associates Degree Nurse

18 CNA Student Results: June 2013 – July 2014
Enrolled: Completed with AC certification: (93%) Passed the updated State CNA Exam: 54 Continuing with education at AC: Employed: data incomplete, at least 19

19 Phlebotomy student results: June 2013 – July 2014
Enrolled (includes 16 who completed CNA first): 39 Completed with AC certification: (85%) Passed the National ASCP Exam, offered in summer 2014: Continuing with education at AC: Employed: data incomplete

20 The advisor’s role Having an advisor trained to consider the needs of continuing education students is important. These needs go beyond the basics of academic advising: Finding financial aid Explaining the prerequisites, including immunizations and background check Finding basic resources in the community, such as transportation, child care, housing, food, clothing, and school supplies
