1 Open Applications Group
Manufacturing Industry July 30, 2002 David Connelly, President and CEO Open Applications Group, Inc.

2 Open Applications Group
Who we are Not-For-Profit Industry Consortium to: Promote interoperability among Business Software Applications and To create and/or endorse one or more standards for easier business software interoperability Next I would like to say a couple of words about the OAGI in order to better explain the plans of the Group to adopt the various specifications within ebXML. The Open Applications group focuses on an enterprise’s entire need for interoperability. They call this End to End integration. This includes B2B, A2A (Internal integration), and A2E (Applications to Execution systems such as Manufacturing Execution or Plant Data Collection systems). The efforts of the OAGI are focused on a horizontal based solution with a strategy to work with the vertical industry groups.

3 Open Applications Group Goal
Most efforts today are focused solely on B2B integration. We think this is not enough. Organizations instead need to be looking at End to End integration which connects the B2B efforts with the Application to Application and Application to Execution software efforts. Without connecting across this continuum, firms will be be missing key capabilities to execute their B2B as well well as getting stuck implementing multiple standards or doing their internal integration the old fashioned point to point way, costing them too much money, too much time, and limiting their ability to be responsive to business needs. E2E = B2B + A2A + A2ETM Everywhere to Everywhere Integration

4 Background Industries . . .
Are moving forward defining interoperability solutions in XML Want to preserve EDI investment where it makes sense Want to define new interoperability needs using XML Don’t want a separate XML for their industry as they understand it limits interoperability across their trading partners Several have chosen OAGIS as the horizontal platform for their vertical work

Technology Strategy The technical architecture of the Open Applications Group is intended to be technology sensitive . . . but not technology specific.

13 Business Object Document (BOD)
OAGIS Core Components Business Object Document (BOD) Application Area Data Area Noun Verb Components Fields Compounds In “modernizing” OAGIS, OAGI needs to make use of “best practices” today. The updates shown here reflect some of these changes. Also, by taking advantage of XML Schema, we are able to separate the Verb and Noun concepts in order to capture a consistent common Noun while providing a consistent representation of the Verb action being performed across the BODs. Also because of the confusion with the ControlArea it has been more appropriately named the ApplicationArea. As it has always been intended as an application layer mechanism. Not to be mistaken for a communication layer.
