25 COLD Commissioning CERN, December 8, 2016

26 Cold Commissioning Warm test of all cryogenic components and controls.
Slow controls tests and data logging. Tests of network communications and alarms. Final safety inspection and clearance for start of the operations. Check of liquid argon supply. First supply delivered and local storage full. Break the vacuum inside the argon volumes and take the internal pressure to ≈ 0.15 bar relative with purified argon gas. The argon gas input line remains open and the pressure is regulated during the whole cooling process. Start cooling. Cool down to about 200 K (≈ 3 days). Continuously check the temperature gradients on the wire chambers. Stop cooling if needed to lower the temperature gradients. Start GAr recirculation and continue to cool down. Cool down to about 130 K (≈ 3 days). Continuously check the temperature gradients on the wire chambers. Stop cooling if needed to lower the temperature gradients. If needed, stabilize the gradients to ≤ 40 K. Start filling with LAr through the purifiers. CERN, December 8, 2016

27 Filling Internal temperature will rapidly go to ≈ 90 K. If needed, pressure will be controlled during the first phase of the filling by manually venting trough dedicated valves. Pressure in the LAr storage dewar has to be regulated to < 3 bar to minimize flash evaporation. Continuously fill at a rate of 1 m3 / module / hour. Progressively close the manual venting valves as the pressure and temperatures stabilize. Continuously check the quality of the argon after the filling filter. Stop the filling when the maximum level is reached. Stabilize the cooling circuit and the GAr recirculation circuits until the pressure is steadily around 0.15 bar and the temperature differences at the output of the cooling shield are within 1 K. This will require ≈ 10 days. Monitor the level. Start the drift field. Turn on the PMTs. Turn on the readout electronics. CERN, December 8, 2016
