Global textile value chain Textile Supplier Tiering Finished Goods Assemblers (+ subcontract)  mega cut/sew Tier 1 Weavers, Knitters & Nonwovens Dyers, Printers, Finishers, & Laminators Tier 2  mega factory complex from greige to garment Spinners, Fiber & Feather Processers Tier 3 Raw Material Suppliers Tier 4 Brands Retailers Large retailer w/ private brand(s) Brands with Strong Retail x100s Agents & Trading Companies  mega trading company Materials “Converter” Could be any combination of organizations upstream in the supply chain to produce finished materials agriculture / ores / minerals Polymers, Fertilizers, Surfactants, Pesticides, etc. Masterbatches, Lubricants, Dyes, Surfactants, Auxiliaries, etc. Sizing agents, Preparation agents, etc. Dyes, Dyestuff auxiliaries, Coatings, Inks, Repellents, etc. Detergents, Conditioning agents, Printing Inks, Treatments, etc. Chemical “Converter” and/or “Trader” Chemical Supplier Tiering CH1 The bluesign system is like nothing else from the above mainly for the reason that it is, a system… and not a methodology based upon a snapshot in time or reliant on the often ineffective randomness of self reporting Bills of Substances, MSDS, and/or testing at the end of a process. Further, since it operates as a closed system all the way back to where the actual molecules are created, it prevents significant “loopholes” that might arise when simple tests or audits are cobbled together to produce a piecemeal approach to chemical integrity. The bottom line is that the only real way to ensure the output you desire is to manage the input that you need. Chemical formulator/ blender/mixer CH2 Chemical Synthesis and Polymerization CH3 Raw chemical supplier CH4 Diagram originally created by Matt Thurston, REI, with further modifications from industry colleagues.
