1 O LORD, You Know Me! Psalm 139

2 You Know me (1-6) You have searched me and known me God knows everything (He is omniscient) Hebrews 4:13, 1 John 3:19- 20, Matthew 10:29-30, cf. John 21:17 God searches (examines, tests). He is righteous – Psalm 11:4-5, 44:21

3 You Know me (1-6) You have searched me and known me (Omniscient) God searches (examines, tests). He tests our actions and our heart – Psalm 11:4-5, 44:21 He is a righteous judge Peter 2:23, Romans 1:32, 2:5

4 You Know me (1-6) You know my sitting down and rising up
He knows when (and why) we rest and when we awake! He knows how we redeem our time – Ephesians 5:16 He knows our thoughts and paths (We cannot lie to Him!)

5 You Know me (1-6) You know my sitting down and rising up
He knows our words - Matthew 12:35-37, James 1:6 He hedges us in (where will you go to escape?) Such knowledge is too wonderful Romans 11:33-36, Psalm 40:5 1 Corinthians 2:10-11

6 I cannot hide from You(7-12)
Where can I go from Your Spirit? You cannot run away from God! David learned this! Jonah learned this! God is everywhere! Jeremiah 23:23-24

7 I cannot hide from You(7-12)
Where can I go from Your Spirit? David presents a series of questions To the heavens? NO! To the grave? NO! (NOTE: Suicide is not an escape) Flying into the seas? No!

8 I cannot hide from You(7-12)
Where can I go from Your Spirit? In places of sheer darkness? No! God’s light exposes – 1 John 1:5, John 3:18-21, Ephesians 5:13 (& 11) Every knee shall bow! Philippians 2:9-11

9 I cannot hide from You(7-12)
Where can I go from Your Spirit? Consider this another way: God is with you wherever you go! Vs. 10 – You hand shall lead me and hold me Psalm 23:1, 4; Hebrews 13:5; Revelation 21:3; Matthew 28:20

10 You created me (13-16) You formed my inward parts… God is all powerful (omnipotent) Matthew 19:26, Genesis 18:14, Ephesians 1: consider the power of God! Ephesians 3:20, Romans 1:20 – because of His power men are without excuse!

11 You created me (13-16) You formed my inward parts… Think of the wonder of a baby created, and as it grows in the mother’s womb! Vs Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. When does life begin? Certainly it is in the womb! Jeremiah 1:5, cf. Exodus 21:22-25 How truly tragic how our society murders millions of innocent souls annually (abortion) for selfish, immoral and undisciplined reasons. We have cheapened the value of life! Hebrews 13:4

12 His precious thoughts (17-18)
David cherishes everything that comes from God They are precious (valued, to be honored) The greatness and wisdom of God cannot be matched by man – Isaiah 55:8-9 This attitude will move us to respect His words and will!

13 Perfect hatred(19-22) David requests that God slay the wicked!
He wants a godly world! He wants nothing to do with ungodliness! Ephesians 5: Corinthians 6: Proverbs 4:14-15 There is a time to hate! Ecclesiastes 3:8

14 Perfect hatred(19-22) “Depart from me you bloodthirsty men”
David wants nothing to do with them. We shouldn't either! 1 Thessalonians 5:22 They speak against God wickedly and blaspheme His name! How do we feel when around those who blaspheme God? Have we grown insensitive to such conduct?

15 Perfect hatred(19-22) “Do I not hate them, O LORD, who hate you?...With perfect hatred.” We sometimes hear we should not hate anyone! IF by hate you mean desire harm and despise them - that is true! Matthew 5:43-45, Romans 12:17-21

16 Perfect hatred(19-22) “Do I not hate them, O LORD, who hate you?...With perfect hatred.” BUT, if by hatred you loathe ungodly conduct, and want nothing to do with it or those practicing such – that is preservation of your godliness! David’s “perfect hatred” was against enemies of God. WHO is your enemy? What are you going to do about it?

17 Search my heart (23-24) “Search me and know my heart…”
David wants to be right with God Willing to have his conduct examined and anything that hinders his fellowship with God exposed.

18 Search my heart (23-24) “Search me and know my heart…” Do we pray to God with this earnestness? Do we really want Him to expose us? Do we really want to make necessary change, if it leads me in the way everlasting?

19 God is here and in control. Is he controlling my life?
