PASS Program Overview Jennifer Shanks – PASS Teacher

2 Positive Approach to Student Success
What is pass? Positive Approach to Student Success The PASS program serves students whose behavior is severe, interferes with educational progress, and has not responded to previously implemented interventions. Cognitive Behavioral Approach – Research based treatment that focuses on how student's thoughts affect how he/she responds to events. PASS is behavior education assisting students in developing replacement behaviors. PASS is not a disciplinary setting or a 'better way to punish students'.

3 PASS students benefit from…
Why pass? Federal Law (IDEA) requires that students with disabilities receive services in the least restrictive environment that is most appropriate for their needs. PASS is part of a continuum of services allowing students with disabilities access to their least restrictive environment. PASS students benefit from… Social learning experiences with their typically developing peers Increased access to the general education curriculum Individualized behavior support integrating research based practices and interventions

4 Program phases Phase 1: "The Draft" – Students are selected for the program by an ARD committee decision. Phase 2: "Training Camp" – Students are self-contained in the PASS classroom receiving behavior education on targeted behaviors and a modified amount of academic work. Phase 3: "The Game" – Students move into their general education classrooms with frequent monitoring and behavior coaching by PASS staff members. Phase 4: "Retirement" – Students have completed the program and serve as mentors for new PASS students. Students will move through phases as they demonstrate readiness. It may be necessary to move back to previous phases if data indicates chronic and intense behaviors are persisting in the general education classroom.

5 Target behaviors Target behaviors are indicated in the student's behavior intervention plan (BIP). PASS staff focus on tertiary behaviors (verbal aggression, physical aggression, elopement, sexual misconduct) that are clearly defined. The primary focus of PASS staff members is to provide students with assistance in developing replacement behaviors for the targeted behaviors that interfere with their education. The assessment of progress for PASS students for rewards or more individualized interventions will focus on the specific targeted behaviors. In other words… PASS staff may provide a reward (outside of the general education classroom) for a student who achieved 80% mastery of his/her targeted behavior of verbal aggression, even though he/she may have received an unsatisfactory conduct grade for unrelated classroom behaviors.

6 Monitoring system in the Classroom
PASS Student on Green (Beginning of class or after redirection) Student demonstrates target behavior and is given one redirection by classroom teacher. Color is changed to yellow. Does the student correct the behavior? Yes No Color is returned to green. After 1-3 minutes on yellow, if student does not correct the behavior, color is turned to red. General education teacher does nothing more, unless behavior is a danger to the student or others. PASS staff will remove the student during their scheduled check. After returning back to class, the student's color is moved back to green.

7 Roles & responsibilities
PASS Staff Provide behavior education for PASS students Provide academic instruction for students in "Training Camp" Consult with teachers regarding problem behaviors Collect ongoing data for students in "The Game" Provide students with individualized rewards for progress on target behaviors General Education Teachers Implement monitoring system in the general education classroom Provide access to general education instruction for students in "The Game" Follow student code of conduct for disciplinary actions not included in target behaviors Provide students with a 'fresh start' following his/her return to the classroom. Communicate concerns with PASS staff for future problem solving
