M-DCPS Digital Convergence Plan Website: Provide a brief overview of the District’s Digital Convergence Initiative: go to the website and discuss as an FYI (raise their awareness of District’s plan.

12 Digital Convergence What is the SAMR Model? (note gray “enhancement) and yellow “transformation” A framework for scaffolding technology integration into education • Used to assess and evaluate the technology use in the classroom

13 The SAMR Model Teachers may use the SAMR Model to evaluate how they are integrating technology into the classroom Educator Video: THE SAMR MODEL Educator video : Introduction to the SAMR Model Dr. Ruben Puentedura developed the SAMR model as a way for teachers to evaluate how they are incorporating technology into their instructional practice. You can use SAMR to reflect upon how you are integrating technology into your classroom. Is it an act of Substitution? Augmentation? Modification? Or Redefinition?

14 Reaching Greater Depths of Technology Integration

15 The SAMR Model: Examples of Tasks
Substitution PowerPoint presentation Online reading or math drills Promethean Board: teaching Use Internet to access information Augmentation Promethean Board: learning tool Find, evaluate, analyze online information (research) Embed media Plan, film, edit, publish video (teacher created) Modification Plan, film, edit, publish video (student created) Promethean Boards: design lesson Categorize, classify, tag, organize, and share digital information Classroom blog design Redefinition Find contacts and connect via Skype Involve students in creating Promethean Board: lessons and resources Publish content to selected platforms Collaborate globally Comment on Global Blogs SAMR These are but a few examples of how the SAMR Model levels are reflected in classroom application. Light Gray Sections = “Enhancement of Learning” (these are more teacher driven) Pink Sections = “Transformation of Learning” (these are where students are more engaged in using the technology for learning)

16 Exploring Online Resources
Connecting with “the Dots”... .com .org .edu As a result of attending this session today, our goal is for you to have information about free online resources to use in your classroom. There are myriad resources online…some are excellent and of great instructional value. We will be looking at at number of these resources today. These names are all part of the Domain Name System: a hierarchical naming system for resources connected to the Internet or private networks .com : A part of the Internet address of many companies and organizations. It indicates that the site is commercial. The phrase dot-com is used to refer generically to almost anything connected to business on the Internet. Note : The explosive growth of wealth connected to the Internet in the 1990s is often said to have created many “ dot - com millionaires. ”. .org: Organization. Originally intended for “non profit” organizations…commonly used by schools, open-source projects and communities and also for-profit entities. .edu: educational institution…usually higher education .gov: government agency . . gov

17 Exploring Online Resources
Connecting with “the Dots” … Research a Website Activity Work with colleagues to: Review Evaluate Present Findings Participants will work with partners to review assigned website and prepare a presentation to share with the group. These websites are easily accessible where teachers do not have to have an account and all of them have valuable information for use in your classroom. Go to the computer lab and have teachers review the website. Give them specific points to report back to the group. (Handout: Notetaking page with list of sites and section for notes.)
