1 What are the different gender stereotypes implied by these pictures of teens?

2

3 I googled: girls' toys: What message is being sent to girls?
What are girls told they're meant to 'be' like? What qualities is it suggesting they should have? Pick at least 1 image as an example for each What patterns do you see? But a car is active, right? Can you see a flaw?

4

5 Then I googled: boys' toys:
How is it different to the girls' toys? What message is being sent to boys? What are boys told they're meant to 'be' like? What qualities is it suggesting they should have? Pick at least 1 image as an example for each What patterns do you see? But the boys are also encouraged to cook, right? They have cars, like the girls did. Can you see a flaw?

6

7 Discuss: Don't we also want female police, scientists, politicians, etc? Don't we also want fathers to look after their children and share the domestic labour? (house work, comfort, cook for the family, etc.) Do you think it's stereotypically ok for girls to be 'tom boys' but not ok for boys to share female 'traits' in society? If so, why do you think that is? What offensive sexist (to boys & girls) insults can you think of that people use regularly? Do you accidentally use them without thinking (I know I've been guilty of it, without meaning to!)?

8 What have we learnt? List in a comparative table: stereotypical male traits vs female traits List some examples that challenge this and inspire contemporary gender roles (because we no longer live in Victorian society!)

9 Advertisements: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppaLa1uXRs4 Muller
Why is it set in heaven? Consider different readings? Why are there no men in the advert? Cleaning What message does this send out about gender? Lynx What does this say about men and women? Coke Would this advert be ok if it was a woman, instead? Can you think of any other examples in the media/shops?

10 HWK: Your challenge: come up with an idea to challenge this
Come up with a gender neutral toy/product (it can be for teenagers if you prefer). Then either: Storyboard a gender neutral advert to sell the product or, Create a poster, to promote the product Use language thoughtfully to appeal to both genders.
