1 TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION ACROSS THE EXTENDED SURFACE

2 Objectives To find the surface temperature.
To show the temperature distribution (gradient) along a pinned or finned heat transfer surface in both free and forced convection.

3 Equipment's Free and Forced Convection TD1005

4 1- Flat Plate 2-Pinned Surface 3-Finned

5 Procedure 1. Remove the fan from the top of the duct.
2. Fit the pinned heat transfer surface. 3. Create blank result table.

6 4. Switch in the heater and set it to 30 watts power.
5. Wait for temperature to stabilize - this may take 30 to 40 minutes. 6. Using sliding magnetic cover, uncover just the first hole (furthest left and nearest the heat transfer surfaces). 7. Add small amount of the thermal paste (supplied) to the probe tip.

7 8. Insert the probe into the first hole, so that it touches the pin.
9. Record the probe, surface and inlet temperatures. 10. Now move the probe into each of other holes, waiting for temperatures to stabilize each time and recording temperatures. 11. Now fit the fan to the top of the duct.

8 12. Create blank result table.

9 13. Set the fan to 2 𝑚 𝑠 and repeat the experiment.
14. Switch off heater and allow the surface to cold down to near ambient temperature. 15. Repeat the experiment for the finned heat transfer surface.

10 The relationship between the Probe temperature and Distance of finned and pinned at free convections

11 The relationship between the Probe temperature and Distance of finned and pinned at forced convections
