7 THE USA The period since 1918 has been called the ‘ American Century ’ , during which the USA has consistently been one of the world’s leading generators in international tourism, especially long-haul travel. With its wealth of national resources and technical know-how, the USA boasts the world’s largest economy, and since the collapse of the Soviet Union it has become the only superpower. The USA is also one of the world’s leading destinations, with tourism accounting for 8.8 per cent of the GDP and employing 7.9 million people.

9 THE DEMAND FOR TOURISM DOMESTIC TOURISM
The USA is an affluent but ‘ leisure poor ’ society compared to most European countries. An important constraint on the demand for tourism is the limited leisure time available to most Americans of working age. The average working week in the USA is 43 hours, compared to 38 hours in the UK; Workers in the USA on average have 18 days of paid annual leave (including public holidays) compared to 37 days for workers in France; This means that holidays for middle-income families tend increasingly to be in the form of short weekend breaks rather than a long summer vacation.

11 THE DEMAND FOR TOURISM OUT BOUND TOURISM
Only 20 per cent of trips are to foreign countries. In 2006 it was estimated that almost 85 per cent of Americans had never travelled outside their own continent, and only 27 per cent owned passports(compared to 80 per cent in the UK). Although overseas travel by Americans has grown steadily since the 1990s, over half of all outbound tourism is to Canada and Mexico. Much of this is business travel, stimulated by the success of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to which the three countries belong. 北美自由贸易协定对美、加、墨三国国际旅游的促进 The major overseas destinations for American tourists are the UK, Italy and Japan. The Caribbean attracts a large number of leisure tourists, including a major share of the growing cruise market.

12 THE DEMAND FOR TOURISM INBOUND TOURISM
Inbound tourism continued to grow steadily over the last two decades of the twentieth century, exceeding 50 million arrivals a year by 2000, but then falling back to 41 million as a result of 9/11. Tourism has since made a healthy recovery, to approach 75 million arrivals in 2014. Canadians make up almost one-third of the total, in addition to many more day visitors. Mexico generated over 17 million arrivals in 2014, but this tends to be a low spend market, with a high volume of trips in the VFR category. Other important markets are Japan, South Korea, Brazil and China. Among European countries the UK is by far the most important generator of demand, followed by Germany, France and Italy.

13 Tourism Demand 5 per cent of GDP and over 6 percent of employment
Successful marketing of Hungary’s two main attractions, namely the capital Budapest and Lake Balaton. DOMESTIC AND OUTBOUND TOURISM Although annual holiday entitlement averages 20 days, effective demand for domestic tourism is reduced by the widespread practice of ‘ moonlighting ’ at several jobs to make ends meet so that holiday propensities languish at around 33 percent. INBOUND TOURISM——4.7million overnight stays in 2013 During the 1980s the number of visitors from the West almost trebled, whereas those from other socialist countries actually declined.

16 CANADA Canada is second only to the Russian Federation in area and is larger than the USA, but has only one-tenth of its population. Climatic factors, such as the chilling effect of Hudson Bay and the Labrador Current(拉布拉多海流), largely explain why the great majority of Canadians occupy a narrow belt of territory lying within 200 kilo metres of the US border.
