2 Study Skills Do’s and Don'ts
Don’t Procrastinate!!!! Reasons for procrastination include: Fear of failure Frustration-getting bogged down Responsibility avoidance Task is not important Often results in stress, anxiety, lack of sleep

Do Set realistic and attainable goals Break tasks down into baby steps Prioritize-focus on reviewing topics you feel less confident about first Reward yourself once you have completed task Manage your time Calendar Apps

6 Study Skills Do’s and Don’ts
Do Sleep at least 6-8 hours the night before an exam Research studies all report a strong relationship between increased levels of sleep and increase in academic success. Lack of sleep-Causes delayed reactions and tendencies to make mistakes. Sleep helps students store memories to be retained and remembered the next day.

7 Study Skills Do’s and Don’ts
Don’t eat or drink foods with high contents of sugar and caffeine Do eat foods foods full of nutrients.

8 What Type of Learner are you?
Visual Learner Learns better by watching lectures Tends to remember things that are written down Able to memorize and recall various information *Charts/flash cards/avoid distractions(windows, etc.)

Auditory Learner Retains information through hearing and speaking Prefers to study in groups-summarize main points out loud to help with memorization *Record lectures/discuss material in study groups

10 What type of learner are you?
Kinesthetic Learner Prefers hands-on approach to learn new material Would rather demonstrate how to do something rather than verbally explain it. Prefers to work in groups *Learn material while being active/take study breaks every 15 min./chew gum while studying

11 Individual Study Techniques
Re-copy/summarize your notes - Visual learner Read your notes out loud to yourself-Auditory learner Use things that help you remember-- mnemonics, songs Google Docs Voice memos; Record to computer and save as mp3 Videos available online

12 Group Study Techniques
Explain a concept to someone who knows nothing about it or tutor someone; share great resources you find Have a friend or family member quiz you on your knowledge- Auditory/Kinesthetic learner Make flashcards for definitions and keywords Make & post a video (e.g., SchoolTube); share videos you find; online study group CastleLearning; “Hot Potato” texting game Quizlet
