1 Naming Ionic and Covalent Compounds
vs. Ionic Compound (Transferring of Electrons) Covalent Compound (Sharing of Electrons)

2 Key Points!! -ionic compounds occur between metals and nonmetals or whenever there is the transferring of electrons -covalent compounds are between nonmetals and nonmetals or metalloids with the sharing of electrons -in all compounds always change the ending of the second word to –ide: EXCEPTIONS: When the second element/compound is a polyatomic do not change anything! EXCEPT if ammonium is the first compound then follow original rules. -when writing the compounds the charges need to balance out -the elements Aluminum, Zinc, and Silver (transition metals) do NOT include roman numerals (the charges are 3+, 2+, 1+ respectively ALL THE TIME)

3 (For Covalently Bonded Compounds)
Key Points Continued!! -when naming transition metal compounds, -mono is not used on the first word -BINARY ACIDS= H + (root) + ic acid -OXYACIDS= H + polyatimic ion -ate to –ic -ite to -ous List of Prefixes (For Covalently Bonded Compounds) Number Prefix 1 Mono- 2 Di- 3 Tri- 4 Tetra- 5 Penta- 6 Hexa- 7 Hepta- 8 9 10 Octa- Nona- Deca-

4 Polyatomic Ions Chart Don’t forget Mercury! Hg2+2
