3 Anti-Bullying Week 2016 Monday 14th November to Friday 18th November 3

4 Values Consideration (listening to other people’s ideas)
Empathy (thinking about how others feel) Respect (stopping when Mrs Barlow bangs the drum and listening) Self- control (not shouting out or carrying on talking when the drum is banged) Responsibility (taking your role seriously and modelling your best behaviour)

5 What does the word ‘bullying’ mean to you?

6 What is Bullying? Rude Mean Bullying Not on purpose Hurtful One-off
Happens more than once, even when you ask them to stop or show that you’re upset. I’m glad I don’t have to wear glasses. I hate your horrible glasses. This slide seeks to explain the difference between one-off rude or mean behaviour, and bullying. Read out the ABA definition of bullying: the repetitive, intentional hurting of one person or group by another person or group, where the relationship involves an imbalance of power.

7 Values Consideration (listening to other people’s ideas)
Empathy (thinking about how others feel) Respect (stopping when I bang the drum) Self- control (not shouting out or carrying on talking) Responsibility (taking your role seriously and modelling your best behaviour) Tolerance (accepting other people’s opinions)

8 Which one is rude, mean and bullying?
Jacob go and play with someone else. We keep telling you everyday we don’t like you because you support that rubbish team! You support Liverpool? Why? They are absolutely rubbish! Your team is silly you must be silly too! Did you hear about Liverpool being knocked out of the Premiership? I am so happy about it!

9 Types of Bullying Physical bullying
Hitting, kicking, tripping, pinching and pushing or damaging property. Verbal bullying Name calling, insults, teasing, intimidation, homophobic, transphobic or racist remarks, or verbal abuse. Social bullying Lying and spreading rumours about someone, negative facial or physical gestures, menacing or contemptuous looks, playing nasty jokes to embarrass and humiliate people, mimicking unkindly or encouraging others to leave someone out. Cyber bullying Abusive or hurtful texts s or posts, images or videos, deliberately excluding others online, nasty gossip rumours, imitating others online or using their log-in.

10 How Does It Make People Feel? (Empathy)
Children that are bullied can experience negative physical, school, and mental health issues. Depression and anxiety (feeling down or scared) Feelings of sadness and loneliness Changes in sleep and eating patterns Loss of interest in activities they used to enjoy Feeling poorly Not doing well at school They are more likely to miss, skip, or drop out of school

11 Why Do People Bully? Remember bullying or hurting someone’s feelings on purpose is never OK. Reasons people might bully are: 1. Feeling angry could cause people to be mean to others. 2. Feeling upset could cause people to lash out at others. 3. Feeling embarrassed could cause people to be unfair to others. 4. Feeling scared could cause people to act angrily towards others. 5. Feeling confident could cause people to be unkind to others. If you think you have been bullying someone then talk to your friends or a teacher for help.

13 What to do if you are being bullied
Tell the person to stop, that it is not OK and that you will tell an adult Tell someone (a friend, a teacher or your parents) Keep the evidence and keep a record At The Downley School it is everyone’s duty to tell if you see someone being bullied. Think about how the bully is making them feel and if you would like it to happen to you. (Empathy)

14 Use our Power for Good

16 What not to do if you are being bullied
DO NOT... Think it's your fault. Nobody deserves to be bullied! Fight back or bully a person back. Keep it to yourself and just hope the bullying will "go away." Make sure you report the bullying. Skip school or avoid school or afterschool activities because you're afraid of the bully. Don’t be afraid to tell. Telling is NOT tattling! It's the right thing to do!

18 Cyber Bullying What is cyber bullying?
Any form of bullying which takes place online or through smartphones and tablets. E.g. Social networking sites, messaging apps, gaming sites and chat rooms Sites/posts/pages that identify and shame individuals including “Hot or Not” Images altered to degrade private individuals, Photos or videos of physical bullying posted to shame the victim, Sharing personal information to upset people Repeatedly targeting other people with unwanted friend requests or messages How does cyber bullying differ from other forms of bullying? Online things can be copied and spread very quickly: go viral Online it is very difficult, often impossible to remove things once they are posted What to do about it? Zero tolerance – all our school values apply online to everyone all of the time Screenshot Report

19 respect, responsibility, self-control and patience
Cyber Bullying We love the internet so ... let’s make sure we use our power for good to make the internet an even better, safer, and kinder place. respect, responsibility, self-control and patience

20 Our School We are committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all of our pupils so they can learn in a relaxed and secure atmosphere. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable at our school. If bullying does occur, all pupils should be able to tell and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively. This means that anyone who knows that bullying is happening is expected to tell the staff. Then: The bullying behaviour or threats of bullying must be investigated and the bullying stopped quickly Every attempt will be made to help the bully (bullies) change their behaviour The bully (bullies) may be asked to genuinely apologise. Every effort will be made to reconcile the pupils Other consequences may take place such as loss of playtimes or Golden time, exclusion from the classroom, detention, a meeting with the Headteacher In serious cases, suspension or even exclusion will be considered After the incident has been investigated and dealt with, monitoring will take place to ensure repeated bullying does not happen

21 Your Task In class you will find out more about bullying and show what you have found out to another year group. This could be as creative as you would like it to be: Videos Songs Raps Poems Posters Games Prize for the best class outcome!

22 Power of Good Is about using our power to stop bullying.
Next Friday we will be dressing as superheroes to support anti-bullying. Money raised will go to children in need (£1 to be a superhero). During the afternoon we will be doing activities in class for Children in Need.

23 A prayer for all of us Here in our school
Let us be peaceful at all times. Let our rooms be full of happiness and respect for each other. Let love be in our hearts With kindness and compassion for all. Let us remember In learning together, We grow together And succeed together.

24 A quiet moment of reflection or prayer
As we reflect, think about how stopping bullying would make the world a better place to be and how you will stop bullying.
