3 Learning Target 7.14/7.17 I can draw evidence from informational texts to describe the role of the trans-Saharan caravan trade in the changing religious and cultural characteristics of West Africa and the influence of Islamic beliefs, ethics, and law. I can explain the importance of Mansa Musa and locate his pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324.

4 Trans-Saharan trade Caravans from the Arabian Peninsula crossed the Sahara between North Africa and West Africa. What were they looking to trade for? GOLD. SALT. Caravans from West Africa also carried ivory, spices, leather, and ostrich feathers. The Caravans also brought something else: Islam.

6 Mansa Musa Mansa Musa was Mali’s most famous ruler.
The wealthiest man that ever lived. Let his subjects practice different religions. He was Muslim. Used his wealth to build more mosques. Helped make Timbuktu a center of Islam. In 1324, Mansa Musa increased the fame of Mali during a journey to Mekkah.

7 The Pilgrimage Why do you think Mansa Musa took a trip to Mekkah?
On his way, he wanted everyone to know he was wealthy. Nations of the world took notice and began to increase trade with Mali. Mansa Musa brought back Muslim scholars to help spread Islam across West and Northern Africa.
