1 IMF’s

2 Review London dispersion forces can occur between 2 nonpolar molecules. This can be between 2 of the same substance or between 2 different substances. It can also include attractions between atoms of noble gases. London dispersion forces are actually present in all chemicals but other stronger forces become dominant.

3 Watch video in link from 1.55-3.00 min.

4 Review Ion-Dipole forces are an attraction between ions from an ionic compound and the dipole on a polar molecule.

6 Review Dipole-Dipole forces are present between 2 polar molecules. This can occur within one substance or between 2 different substances

7 A Special Case of Dipole-Dipole Forces

8 Hydrogen bonding A special type of dipole-dipole attraction.
2 things must occur: One Molecule must contain a hydrogen directly bonded to O, N, or F. Must attract to O, N, or F on an adjacent molecule. This is an exceptionally strong IMF due to the stronger dipole caused by the high electronegativity. Water is the perfect example. The strong dipole on one water molecule will attract to the dipole on the neighboring molecule.
