1 Confirmation Class Lesson 4

2 Christ’s Person (who he is)
John 3:14-18 Matthew 1:23 The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” —which means, “God with us.” Matthew 17:5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” 1. a. He is called God John 20:28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Luke 2:11

3 Jesus = Savior Christ = Anointed One (Greek) Messiah = Anointed One (Hebrew) Lord (Jehovah) = “I Am” Immanuel = God with us

4 Therefore, Jesus Christ is True God
b. He is DESCRIBED a God (eternal, almighty, all-knowing, unchangeable) 1. c. He ACTS LIKE God (Performs miracles, forgives sin). John 1:1-2 Matthew 28:18-20 John 1:43-51 Matthew 9:1-8 Therefore, Jesus Christ is True God

5 a. He is CALLED man (Son of Man, Son of David)
I Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. b. He is DESCRIBED as a man (Flesh and blood, he grew) Luke 24:39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.”

6 c. He ACTS like a man (hungry, tired, wept, thirsty, suffered, died)
Matthew 4:2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. John 11:35 Jesus wept. John 19:28 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” Luke 23:46 Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last. Mark 4:38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” Therefore, Jesus Christ is also true man

7 3. Jesus is God and man in one person
Incarnation = God taking on human flesh, becoming man Galatians 4:4-5 As Man, Jesus: Lived a perfect life under the law in our place. 2. Suffered and died for sin in our place. Mark 10:45

8 b. As God, His perfect life and his death counted for everyone.
Psalm 49:7-9 c. The God-man Jesus is our Redeemer (one who buys back). John 1:29 Through the virgin birth God got into the world the Savior we all need, one who is both God and man. Matthew 1:23 The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” —which means, “God with us.”

9 Christ’s Office (His official position)
Acts 10:38 As our High Priest, Christ 1. Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit at his baptism. 1. Offered himself up as a once for all sacrifice. 2. Pleads (intercedes) for us before God. Hebrews 7:27 I John 2:1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

10 As our Prophet, Christ 1. Made known the message of salvation personally while on earth Matthew 17:5 John 20:19-23 2. Makes known the message of salvation today through Christians. II Corinthians 5:17-20 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.

11 As our King, Christ 1. Rules in our hearts Luke 17:21
2. Rules the whole universe for our good Ephesians 1:22-23

14 Luther’s Evening Prayer
In the name of God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. I thank you, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, your dear Son, that you have graciously kept me this day. Forgive me all my sins, and graciously keep me this night. Into your hands I commend my body and soul and all things. Let your holy angel be with me, that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen. Luther’s Evening Prayer
