1 August 9, 2017 Agenda & notebook should be on table
WORK MODE: SILENT Agenda & notebook should be on table Complete the Phase Diagram side of the worksheet (the “Y”) Read both sides of the handout – add to your notes if needed. Revisit your warm-up from yesterday to see if you want to change any ideas Homework: Read chapter 3, section 2. Know the gas laws. Be prepared to discuss (take notes if needed). USA Test Prep due Friday.

2 Think! In your notebook, write down three questions about how the plasma ball works Share your questions with your group Discuss and develop a hypothesis WORK MODE: WHISPER

3 Think! After reading through the handout, look at your questions and hypotheses from yesterday Discuss your new information. Can you answer your questions? Can you refute or refine your hypothesis? WORK MODE: WHISPER

4 Compare & Contrast Observe the two different models (pictures) representing the states of matter How are the two similar and different? How do the representations of plasma help you understand how the plasma ball works?

5 How can we explain the differences among solids, liquids, and gases?
Spacing of Molecules Energy of Molecules Solid Liquid Gas Use words such as least, medium, most, closest, medium, farthest, etc.

6 How can we explain the differences among solids, liquids, and gases?

8 August 9, 2017 Have notebook & agenda on table
Complete both sides of the worksheet Homework: Review for quiz! Read chapter 2, section 2. Be prepared to discuss (take notes if needed). USA Test Prep due Friday.

9 Quiz Tomorrow Know the definition of chemical and physical properties
Know the difference between chemical and physical properties For CHEMICAL properties, know REACTIVITY and FLAMMABILITY/COMBUSTABILITY For PHYSICAL properties know the measurement terms from chapter 2, section 1 (volume, mass, weight) and the terms on page 45 (conductivity, state, density, solubility, ductility, and malleability)

10 Describing Matter You have 4 “mystery powders”
In your notebook, create a bubble map for 2 of the substances on your table (label with the powder’s number) Try to find FIVE descriptive terms for each substance What were some observations that you made? Did you have to change the substances to make these observations? Many of these observations are PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

11 Observing how matter interacts
You have two liquids The brown liquid is IODINE The clear liquid is ACETIC ACID When directed, place a drop of each on each powder Record your observations in your notebook in a table Powder Iodine Acetic Acid 1 2 3 4

12 Observing how matter interacts
Powder Iodine Acetic Acid 1 No reaction (stayed brown) No reaction 2 Reaction (bubbled) 3 Reaction (turned black) 4

13 Can you match the powders?
Baking Soda White, powdery solid Reacts to acetic acid Non-reactive to iodine Cornstarch Non-reactive with acetic acid Reacts to iodine Salt White, crystalline solid Non-reactive to acetic acid Sugar

14 Physical and Chemical Properties
Help us identify substances Pure substances such as elements and compounds have definite properties Physical properties include color, taste, texture, density, boiling point, and melting points Chemical properties include reactivity and flammability

15 Did you see a reaction? When you change your substance while testing it, you are looking for CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
