1 Physical Properties: What We Can Observe
Learning Goals: I will be able to explain what a physical property is. I will be able to describe some useful properties.

2 Minds On! How do you choose a running shoe? Are comfort and support more important than breathability and weight? How important are style and colour? In this activity you will examine the physical properties of the materials that make up a running shoe

3 Table 1: Parts of a Running Shoe
Shoe part Material Used Physical Properties Function laces polyester flexible Which of the physical properties you listed are most useful in a running shoe? Which materials used might present a problem to the environment when the shoes are thrown away? Explain your thinking.

4 States of Matter There are 3 states of matter:
Solid – definite shape and volume Liquid – definite volume, takes the shape of its container Gas – occupies the volume of its container and takes the shape of its container

5 What is a physical property?
A physical property is a characteristic you can measure or observe without forming a new substance You use your 5 senses to observe physical properties: What are the 5 senses? Which one do we NEVER use in a lab?

6 Qualitative versus Quantitative Properties
Property Qualitative Quantitative Description Describe what something looks like and how it feels Describe through measurement and numbers Examples Brittleness – how breakable or flexible something is Length – how long something is Hardness – how easily a substance can be scratched Volume – how much space something occupies Solubility – how well a substance can dissolve in another substance (usually in water) Temperature – how hot or cold a substance is

7 Solubility: A Useful Physical Property
Soluble – able to dissolve in a substance Insoluble – unable to dissolve in a substance Can you name some substances that are soluble in water, and some substances that are insoluble in water? Soluble in Water Insoluble in Water Cotton candy Rocks salt Sand Baking soda Oil sugar Plastic alcohol hair
