5 Gambling has caused family problems to arise/intensify
REASONS WHY Gambling has caused family problems to arise/intensify Many gamblers have lost a lot of money, causing financial difficulties at home and strains in relationships.

6 REASONS WHY Many gamblers who lose money tend to borrow money from loan sharks, hoping to recoup their losses

7 Eg. Becoming runners for the loan sharks
RESULTING IN: Interests being accumulated over time when the gamblers do not have the money to repay the loan sharks Gamblers who are desperate might ask for other ways to repay their debts Eg. Becoming runners for the loan sharks therefore causing them to engage in illegal activities

13 Class discussion 1. What are the benefits to opening casinos? Relieve stress and to contribute to development of the society: source of income for some, act as tax revenue for the country. 2. How does gambling cause family problems? (stated in article) , bring about financial problems to families that cannot be solved easily if debts are too much. 3. Why is it that more problems surfaced is important than making money through casinos in Singapore? Singapore itself is a rich country but the people are poorer. Money lost could be earned back but once a family break apart due to splurging in gambling, it cannot be ‘ earned’ back.

14 4. Why does the government still continue to have a casino then
4. Why does the government still continue to have a casino then? The main concern for the government is to ensure a stable flow of tourist or even to boost tourism industry in Singapore. This is why they implement a fee of $100 for Singaporeans in order to get in the casino initially. This means that they still put into consideration that they hope that the casino will not become a place for Singaporeans to get addicted to. 5. But gambling isn’t a problem for the rich. This is true and that is why our group only focus mainly on poor that will be affected more if they are addicted to gambling.

15 6. There shouldn’t be a problem since the government can help the addicts. The government provide limited help such as helplines or setting up gambling addicts center. However, they cannot force the troubled ones to seek help. This is why the government cannot do much help but it must depend on the individual, whether or not the help provided by the government is helpful to them. 7. Can you explain more because the article claim that there is very little people seeking help but there is still a sharp increase. It sounds a bit contradicting. This is why we say that addicted to gambling has became such a serious problem that there is sharp increase of people seeking help yet the numbers are still far too low. (referring to a ratio )

16 8. Why can’t we give everyone a limit to go in and gamble and once the limit is reached, we will stop gambling? This is because to a rich person, the loss is nothing compared to a poor.

17 Key points to note The Singapore government realized that $100 is too little to stop/ discourage Singaporeans from getting in Main point: the ability to control oneself is much more worrying than financial status being affected due to gambling Measures are meant to reduce rate of increase of gambling addicts that do not seek help.
