What is a psychological disorder?

Symptoms reflecting abnormalities of the mind Thoughts, feelings, and emotions that are persistent, uncontrollable, and harmful/debilitating in some way 40% of people struggle with a psychological disorder at one time in their life

7 Categories of Mental Disorders
Delirium, dementia, etc. Disorders in thinking caused by Alzheimer’s, HIV, etc. Substance-related disorders Problems caused by dependence on drugs/alcohol Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders Disorders related to major disturbances in perception, language, thought, emotion, and behavior Mood Disorders Disorders related to disturbances in mood, such as depression, mania, bi-p Anxiety Disorders Problems related to severe anxiety and phobia Somatoform Disorders Problems related to unusual/unfounded preoccupation with physical health

8 Categories of Mental Disorders
Dissociative Disorder Normal integration of memory or identity is temporarily altered Sexual and Gender Disorder Problems related to unsatisfactory sexual fulfillment, finding unusual objects arousing, gender identity confusion, etc. Personality Disorder Problems related to lifelong behavior patterns, such as self-centeredness, over-dependency, antisocial behavior

Psychodynamic Therapy Freudian Centers on subconscious Delves into past Gives attention to defense mechanisms Long-term therapeutic approach Strategies include: free association, dream analysis, hypnosis, etc

Client-Centered Therapy - Rogerian Form of talk therapy Therapist creates a comfortable, non-judgmental atmosphere by demonstrating genuineness, empathy, and unconditional positive regard Non-directive approach

Gestalt Therapy Max Werthheimer Seeing, perceiving, and feeling is valued over analyzing, judging, evaluating Patients can see, hear, and be told how they are experienced Growth occurs from connections between real people Self-awareness develops not by talking about problem but by engaging in the relationship with the therapist

Behavioral Therapy John Watson/BF Skinner Premise: All behaviors are learned Goal: To replace undesirable behaviors with desirable ones Strategies include: homework assignments, journaling, role play, reward systems, etc.
