Compounds Elements Homogeneous (solutions) Heterogeneous Evaporation LG Distillation – uses the different boiling points of components to separate a solution (evaporation followed by condensation) Sifting Filtering Separate using chemical reactions components are chemically combined Cannot be broken down into simpler substances.

Process used (sifting, filtering, magnetism, distillation) Physical property exploited (boiling point, magnetism, size, solubility) Aluminum (Al), Iron Filings (Fe) Use magnetism  Fe sticks to magnet, Al does not Magnetism is the physical property used Rocks, sand groups brainstormed and completed this process Salt, sand Add H2O to the mixture  Salt dissolves, sand doesn’t [physical property = solubility] Pour mixture through filter  sand remains, salt and water go through. [physical property used = size] Boil/Evaporate salt water  water evaporates, salt remains [physical property used = boiling point] Salt, sand, iron filings
