PAC NEXT Workshop Agenda 1:00pm – Introduction 1:15pm – Sustainable Innovation 1:45pm – Sustainable Packaging Design Guide 2:30pm – Break 2:45pm – (cont’d) Sustainable Packaging Design Guide 3:45pm – Consumer Engagement 4:15pm – Workshop Feedback and Closing 4:30pm – Adjournment

3 Sustainable Innovation
- Making the Right Choices Carol Zweep, GFTC Co-Chair of Sustainable Innovation November 6th, 2012

4 Sustainable Innovation Centre of Excellence
Sustainable Innovation • Objectives Develop a technical process to review packaging innovations to assess their environmental impact as well as their impact on current end-of-life systems to anticipate and avoid unintended consequences Fact-based approach to provide industry with insight to emerging packaging trends and an early warning system to help avoid system inefficiencies New packaging materials and additives are constantly being introduced into the market with little research done on end-of-life implications

5 HIGHLIGHTS Accomplishments
Completed Plastic PET decision tree/flow chart Review of all other plastic categories in progress Review of Paperboard in progress Draft of Aluminum, Glass, and Steel categories Next Steps Seek material experts for aluminum and steel; Complete review of Aluminum, Glass, and Steel Identify opportunities to collaboration with Sustainable Packaging Design Guide Committee Timing Publish all decision trees/flow charts by end of Q4 2012

6 Decision Tree for Current Recycling Stream
Material Class Paperboard, Glass, Steel, Aluminum, Plastic Material Sub-class Example: For Plastics - PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, PS, Other Package Format Example: For PET – Bottles, Jars, Clamshells, Trays, Tubs & Lids, Sealed Pkg, Cold Drink Cups, Films Components Example: For PET Bottles – Body Material (including Barrier Layer/Coating/Additives), Closure & Liners, Sleeves/Safety Seals/Labels, Inks,/Adhesive/Direct Printing & Decoration, Attachments Decision YES, NO or CONDITIONAL for current recycling stream in Canada

7 Example: PET Bottle Closure Body Material Label

8 Primary Package – Material Class & Sub-class
Plastic PET HDPE PVC LDPE PP PS Other Glass Steel Aluminum Paperboard

9 PET Bottles, Jars, Jugs, Clamshell, Trays, Tubs & Lids - Components
Body Material Barrier Layer, Coating, Additives Closure & Liners (Bottles, Jars & Jugs Only) Sleeves, Safety Seals & Labels Inks, Adhesive, Direct Printing and Decoration Attachments (Bottles, Jugs & Trays Only)

10 PET Package Format – Body Material
Density With optical sorter, any material category (i.e. PET-G) CONDITIONAL Floats if < 1 (PP, LDPE, HDPE) YES Sinks if > 1 (PET blends, PLA, PVC, PS) NO Colour Clear transparent, light blue & green transparent YES Other transparent colors, translucent, opaque NO

11 PET Package Format – Body Material
Barrier Layer, Coatings, Additives Barrier Layers i.e. EVOH, nylon-based (nylon-6, MXD6) Multi-layer materials that do not delaminate NO Barrier Coating i.e. epoxies, amorphous or “diamond-like” carbon, silicon oxide Case by case basis - readily separable or no problem for the reclaiming process or product CONDITIONAL Additives i.e. nucleating agents, hazing agents, scavengers Fluorescers, biodegradable additives OTHERS - Case by case basis for impact on reclaimed product (i.e. discoloration or haze) CONDITIONAL

12 PET Package Format – Closure & Liner
No liner YES No pilfer-proof band YES PP, LDPE, HDPE YES PVC, PS, thermoset plastic, steel, aluminum NO Liner EVA liners with plastic closure YES EVA liner with aluminum closure, silicone seals NO

13 PET Package Format – Sleeves, Safety Seals & Labels
Detaches easily in separation system (determined on case by case basis) CONDITIONAL PVC, aluminum foil NO Labels PP, OPP, PE, PS foam, paper YES PVC, PS, PLA, delaminating material, metallized material NO PET-G CONDITIONAL Full /partial body sleeve may interfere with optical sorting systems CONDITIONAL

14 PET Package Format – Ink, Adhesives, Direct Printing
Ink, Adhesives, Direct Printing & Decorating Ink Ink bleeding from labels NO Adhesives Pressure sensitive labels separate from PET in hot caustic water wash YES Label adhesives water F YES If does not meet above criteria NO Direct Printing & Decorating Direct printing (other than date coding) NO

15 PET Package Format – Attachments
Base cups, handles, etc. Unfilled HDPE or clear PET YES Attachment adhesives water F YES Welded attachments NO RFID NO
