1
Parts of the Microscope and Their Function
On the next slide there is an image of a microscope, very similar to the scopes we use in class. Click on the boxes to see the name and function of each part of the microscope.
2
Rules of using a microscope
Always carry with 2 hands Make sure microscope is ready for use Do not force knobs Be careful of the cords
3
Parts of a microscope Contains the lens and magnifies the image for the viewer
4
Parts of a microscope Eyepiece Contains the 10X magnifying lens
Contains the lens and magnifies the image for the viewer
5
Parts of a microscope Coarse Adjustment Knob
Focuses the image under low power Use this first Used for focusing the microscope at different objectives
6
Parts of a microscope Fine Adjustment Knob
Focuses the image under high power Use this last Used for focusing the microscope at different objectives
7
Parts of a microscope Nosepiece Holds the objective lenses
Revolves to change magnification Revolving circular structure containing the objectives
8
Parts of a microscope Objectives Low power (short)
Magnifies 4X Medium power (medium) Magnifies 10X High power (long) Magnifies 40X Lens that receives light from object to form a magnified image that you view through the eyepiece
9
Parts of a microscope Stage
Supports and holds the microscope slide while viewing Surface on which the slide is placed
10
Parts of a microscope Stage clips
Place on microscope slide to secure into place after you have focused on your specimen Used to hold the slide on the stage
11
Parts of a microscope Diaphragm
Controls the amount of light available while viewing sample Controls the amount of light that passes up through the bottom of the stage
12
Parts of a microscope Light source
Shines light up through the diaphragm and stage to light the object being viewed Lighted area is called your “Field of View” Provides a steady stream of light that passes up through the bottom of the stage
13
Parts of a microscope Arm
Supports the body tube which connects the eyepiece to the set of objective lenses Part of the microscope that is used for carrying
14
Parts of a microscope Body tube
Tube extending from eyepiece to the objectives
15
Parts of a microscope Base Supports the microscope
16
Magnification Multiply the eyepiece magnification (10X) by the objective magnification (4X, 10X, 40X) Example: 4 x 10 = 40X total
17
How to use a microscope Place the slide on the stage
Use stage clips to secure slide Adjust nosepiece to lowest setting (Lowest = shortest objective) Look into eyepiece Use coarse adjustment knob
