Plan your time in graduate school Build skills needed to succeed at UW-Madison and beyond Communication Teaching and mentoring Leadership And more… Develop your career/Explore career options Connect with campus resources All students need to take responsibility or the initiative to plan their time in graduate school. To help you plan your time, read your program’s handbook for graduate students so that you know the deadlines you’ll need to meet. It is also important to talk with graduate students in your program that have been here for a year or two so that they can share their experiences. Through the experiences of being a student in your program and participating in campus’ activities or professional organizations you will build the skills needed here and in your next career.

Programming and other resources for students at different stages of graduate study For example this welcome, organized by Amy Fruchtman from the OPD. Messages that we sent to new students this summer – about living in Madison, registering for classes, and the Guide to Graduate Student Life. OPD supports you throughout your time in graduate school by providing programming and other resources. We are located in Bascom Hall, but we hold our events throughout campus.

Resources to help you make the most of your time in graduate school Individual Development Plan (IDP) Plan for developing skills to meet academic and career-related goals Recommended for all graduate students Required for graduate students supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) (and by some graduate programs) grad.wisc.edu/pd/idp The Graduate School recommends that all graduate students create a plan for their time in graduate school, and to talk with faculty about their plan, and to update the plan annually. Your program may have guidelines on how to create a plan, or may have specific requirements for you to complete a plan. The OPD offers workshops and resources on our website on how to create goals that are realistic and attainable.
