Presentation modified and prepared by Alice Finch 2016 1st Grade Art Project West Mercer Elementary Art Enrichment Program

2 How this PowerPoint Works
Some of the slides in this presentation are hidden. (The slide number has a box and slash through it.) A hidden slide will not be shown in ‘slide show’ mode. It is visible and can be edited etc. in ‘normal’ mode. You can change modes on the view tab or with the icons in the lower right corner. Some of the slides have notes. These notes contain more detailed information that will be helpful in understanding the background of an artist or talking points for a slide. If you would like view or print this presentation with the notes, use the ‘notes page’ on the view tab or on the print menu.

7 Today’s Project Butterfly prints

8 Step 1 – Parts of a butterfly
What are the parts of a butterfly? What kind of symmetry does it have?

9 Step 2 – Draw a butterfly body
Draw a long, thin oval for the abdomen Add a shorter, thin oval for the thorax Look at the wings- what simple shapes can we use to draw them? Triangle Petal

10 Step 3 – Butterfly details
Draw wing membranes What shapes are they? What other details can you add? Antennae Swallowtail shape to hind wing

11 Step 4 – Transfer design to foam
Put your drawing on top of the foam Make sure that it fits! Go over your design with your pencil hard enough to make an impression on the foam (but not cut through it)

12 Step 5 – Inking Squirt ink onto acrylic
Use the brayer to even it out by rolling up and down The ink is ready when it no longer slides on the ink and when it makes a “sticky” sound Ink the foam evenly from edge to edge

13 Step 6 - Printing Pick up the foam and carefully set it down on the printing paper Rub it gently with the baren (wooden spoons) Peel it up foam and you have a print!

14 Step 7 - Dots Sign your finished print
Rinse off your foam- you can take it home too You may add decorative dots around the edge of your print with the q-tips
