1 Year 2 Spring Term

2 Literacy Literacy based on the following books –
Danny the Champion of the World Esio Trot The BFG Suspense writing, information books, poetry, riddles, alternate endings.

3 Maths Place value Sequences Addition and Subtraction
Multiplying and dividing Data Shape

4 Egypt Ancient Egypt/Modern Egypt Exploring and using maps Tutankhamun
Pyramids

5 Spelling All of the class have completed the Read Write Inc Phonics program. Now in groups following the Read Write Inc Spelling program. Log books come home with tricky words, children to spend time learning these.

6 Feedback Green for great! – plenty praise
Pink for think… - this isn’t a negative, it’s a tip to improve or explaining next steps of learning. Blue for better! – evidence of them improving

7 Feedback We don’t expect children to get everything right all the time – you don’t learn without mistakes!

8 Preview Next week your child will be learning…
Discussing this with your child with give them a massive advantage as they will have confidence and more vocabulary about the topic

10 SATs – May/June English – Reading and Writing
Writing – two pieces of writing: one longer, one shorter. Contrasting text types – story and riddle.

11 SATs Writing – looking for:
Imaginative, interesting and thoughtful texts. Appropriate to task. Organisation, structure, paragraphs. Writing in sentences. Accurate spelling.

12 SATs Reading test – Comprehension looking for - Reading for meaning.
Select and retrieve relevant information. Explain and comment on writers’ purpose, viewpoint and use of language. Inference and deduction

13 SATs Reading task – Choosing a book – revealing child’s preference and understanding about books. Reading aloud – evidence of independence. Discussion – understanding of text.

14 SATs Spelling Test – dictation. Practice when reading.

15 SATs Writing mark – longer task, shorter task, handwriting and spelling combined. Reading mark - from task or test.

16 SATs Maths – level 2 test or level 3 test.
Variety of questions testing ‘Using and Applying’, ‘Number’, ‘Shape, Space and Measures’ and ‘Data Handling’.

17 APP The overall marks submitted for Reading, Writing and Maths are taken from teacher assessment, using a range of work from over the year. SATs have to be carried out to back up teacher assessment.

18 How to prepare for the SATs
In school and at home…

19 Reading Children will be soon choosing own book out of baskets.
Reminded to check the book is appropriate. Choose one that interests them. Can change it as often as they want. Good preparation for reading SATs task. Lots of talking about books! Encourage children to read a wide variety of texts at home.

20 Reading At home every night Talk about the book -
What does this word mean? What other word could you use instead? How is this character feeling? How do you know? What do the pictures in the book tell you about the story?

21 Reading Identify any unfamiliar words in the title.
Who is the author? Illustrator? What does the title tell you about the story? Is it fiction or non-fiction? Predict what will happen in the story. Summarize the story. Find a describing word.

22 Reading Stuck on a word? Use pictures to help
Miss out the word stuck on and go back Look at the sounds that are in the words

23 Reading Punctuation Pause at full stops Encourage expression in voice

24 Reading Great to read the same book over and over!

25 Writing In learning logs encourage –
Children to write about what interests them. Neat handwriting – on the line, clear finger spaces. Joined up. Start sentences with a capital letter, use full stops. Exciting vocabulary.

26 Writing Taught by VCOP - Vocabulary – adjectives
Connectives – to join sentences together Openers – words that start sentences Punctuation – different types

27 Maths Tips about how to help at home will be sent home.
Sequences, e.g. Odd and even numbers Reading scales. 2D and 3D shapes. Symmetry.

28 Maths 2, 5 and 10 times tables. Problems. Time. Bar charts.
Coin recognition.
