Location of Country South Korea is located in Eastern Asia, on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula jutting out from the far east of the Asian land mass. Being on a peninsula, the only bordering country is North Korea. South Korea is mostly surrounded by water and has 2,413 km of coast line along three seas. To the west, is the Yellow Sea, to the south is the South China Sea, and to the east is the Sea of Japan (East Sea).

Geography At 98,480 square kilometers, South Korea is slightly larger than the American state of Indiana. Two hundred and ninety square kilometers of South Korea are occupied by water. The approximate coordinates are 37° North, 127° 30 East.

Climate The climate of the Korean Peninsula differs dramatically from north to south. The southern regions experience a relatively warm and wet climate similar to that of Japan, affected by warm ocean waters including the East Korea Warm Current. The northern regions experience a colder and to some extent more inland climate, in common with Manchuria. For example, the annual precipitation of the Yalu River valley (600 mm) is less than half of that on the south coast (1500 mm). Likewise, there is a 20 °C difference in January temperature between the peninsula's southern and northern tips.

Nature The vernacular of the Korean garden generally includes evergreen trees (various species of Korean pine) as a constant, flowering pear trees for spring; stands of straightest bamboo alongside the secondary entrance gates of temples and palaces to symbolize fidelity and honesty; and straight walks tend to be bordered by larger sized gravels of irregular shape.

Korean Food It is based largely on rice, vegetable, meats and tofu (dubu in Korean). Traditional Korean meals are named for the number of side dishes (banchan) that accompany the ubiquitous steam-cooked short-grain rice, soup and kimchi (fermented, spicy vegetable banchan, most commonly cabbage, radish or cucumber). Every meal is accompanied by up to twelve banchan. Korean food is usually seasoned with sesame oil, doenjang (fermented soybean paste), soy sauce, salt, garlic, ginger and gochujang (red chile paste). Korea is the largest consumer of garlic, ahead of Italy and Southeast Asia. The cuisine varies seasonally, and especially during winter, relies much on pickled vegetables preserved in big ceramic containers stored underground in the outdoor courtyard. Preparation of Korean food is generally very labour-intensive.
