4 Employment Authorization
International students in F-1 status have limited work authorization available since the primary purpose of an F-1 Visa is study. However, international students can work under certain circumstances. Off-campus authorization: Curricular Practical Training (CPT)—before completion of studies Optional Practical Training (OPT) PRE-COMPLETION OPT AND POST COMPLETION OPT STEM Extension You must have work authorization prior to working.

Directly related to your field of study Completed with a specific employer Fulfills a degree requirement CURRICULAR PRACTICAL TRAINING

7 IF YOU PLAN TO APPLY FOR CPT APPLIED LEARNING PRACTICUM
1. Enroll in the INTR Class. IF YOU PLAN TO APPLY FOR CPT YOU MUST BE ENROLLED IN APPLIED LEARNING PRACTICUM (INTR 599 / 799) BY September 16, 2016 by 12:00 PM IF NOT ENROLLED BY THIS DATE YOU WILL NOT BE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN CPT UNTIL NEXT TERM!

9 CPT / FULL-TIME OR PART-TIME
Authorization is part-time (20 hours per week) OR Full-time (anything greater than 20 hours per week) If you work full-time you can not exceed 11 months and 29 days of employment or you will NOT qualify for OPT (optional practical training). If you have previously used OPT as part of another master’s program you can remain on CPT for the entire program as long as you enroll in the CPT Course CPT / FULL-TIME OR PART-TIME

10 OPT / OPTIONAL PRACTICAL TRAINING
Maximum of 12 months of OPT per educational level (Example: BS, MA, PhD) OPT can be used before and/or after your program of study United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) can take up to 3 months for approval OPT / OPTIONAL PRACTICAL TRAINING
