2. Satire
Origin: Latin word satura, meaning “dish of mixed ingredients usually in reference to a sweet fruit dessert”.
TPS and use what you know about satire already to discuss how the Latin root could be used in understanding the idea.
Definition: A technique in which a writer ridicules or criticizes a person, group, institution or event using certain literary devices.
Characteristics
Usually attacking greed, injustice, cruelty, stupidity and deceit
Usually encourages laughter through shock/awe or at someone’s expense
Almost always sarcastic or ironic
Usually has a tone of “mock-approval”
sarcastically supporting the very thing it is criticizing.
TPS and think of one modern example of this in society, media, news etc.

3. Satirical Techniques: SHIP
Sarcasm- a cutting and often ironic remark conveying contempt or ridicule (verbal irony)
Hyperbole/overstatement- exaggeration, not meant to be taken literally for effect
Irony- the expectation of something happening when the direct opposite taking place
Verbal, Situational and Dramatic
Parody – imitation of another work for humorous effect
TPS and try to come up with an example of each of these in our society, media news etc. Remember, many of these overlap!!!
