5 What is an Introduction?
An introduction is how you start your essay in one paragraph An introduction gives your reader a chance to get to know the subject of your essay An introduction has THREE PARTS.

6 What are the Three Parts?
Set up your tree map now. Place “Introduction” on the top of the map First branch: Hook Second branch: Summary of Book/Issue Third branch: Claim Statement

7 How Do You Start an Introduction...Hook!
Background information that will catch the reader’s attention An interesting fact about the setting/characters An interesting question So, Mrs. Hampton …what’s the point?

9 What Comes After the Hook?
After you catch reader’s attention with the first sentence, use the rest of the paragraph to lead into your CLAIM. You do this with a summary of information about the book or the issue. Double check to make sure it goes with your CLAIM.

11 How do you finish an introduction?
A CLAIM! You already have examples written down. Please follow the given format for your claim statement. Make sure to finish with a period and to separate your reasons with commas. Did you know? Commas save lives
