The Research Question If you have a research question already, make sure that you carry out background reading to support your RQ. If you do not have a research question, use background reading to lead you towards a subject/topic.

Keep copies of your essay in different locations e.g. home and school, but always know which is the most up-to-date. (Save to both locations at the same time if you can.)

Primary sources A primary source is a document or physical object which was written or created during the time under study. These sources were present during an experience or time period and offer an inside view of a particular event.

Secondary Sources A secondary source interprets and analyzes primary sources. These sources are one or more steps removed from the event.

Advanced Searches To search for an exact phrase, enclose the phrase in double quotation marks (e.g., "industrial revolution").

In the Keyword search box you can use Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) to connect your search words. AND means you want publications having all your search terms; OR means you want publications having any of the terms; NOT means you want the first term but not the second term.

In the other search boxes you should use the drop-down list instead of Boolean operators, for example to choose material types or select date ranges.

Keyword Searches Good key words are the important words or short phrases that specifically describe your topic and closely related topics. They are not long sentences. Start as soon as you have a general topic. You will be able to add more key words to your list as you focus and learn more about your topic.
