What is Stress? Meaning: A state of mental or emotional strain (ORD) A response to real and imagined event that alters the normal functioning of the body. “wear and tear” for continually changing environment.

3 What causes stress? Unfamiliar or demanding situation
Crisis of basic needs Serious life-changing events – death, divorce, changing jobs, etc. Unwanted small events – missing the school bus, meeting the principal, losing the lunch money, etc.

4 RECOGNIZING STRESS Stress can occur in both good and bad situations.
Stress can have positive and negative result. Certain amount of stress is normal and necessary Too much stress can affect and drain the energy. 5. Some stressors affect most people

5 The World Health Organization (WHO) has
named the STRESS a worldwide epidemic. Why it is named epidemic ? Because, stress is widespread in a very time pressured and competitive life of modern fast-paced and technological society, specially for students community.

6 KINDS OF STRESS STRESS Acute Stress: reaction to an immediate threat, e.g. noise, crowding, isolation, hunger, etc. Chronic Stress: e.g. Highly pressured work, long term relationship problem, persistent financial worries. Positive Stress: a positive effect spurring motivation and awareness to cope with challenging situations. Negative Stress: reaction to a particular event and minor conditions such as headaches, digestive problems, skin complaints, insomnia, ulcers, etc.

7 SIGN OF STRESS Emotional : fast heart beat, fast breathing,
burst of energy, sad, depress, mood swing, tense, angry, etc. Physical : headaches, back pain, upset stomach, trouble in sleeping, trouble in staying awake.

8 MANAGING STRESS Identify the stressor.
Consider all possible solutions for removing or minimizing the stress. Identify the consequences of each solution. Select the best solution. Make and implement an action plan.

9 6. Evaluate the results. 7. Learn to cope with any situation – relax, enjoy, stretch muscles, prioritize, accept, be positive, express feelings, take steps, learn to say ‘no’, smile and laugh, and talk to someone. Prepare for stress. We cannot avoid a stressful situation, as it is the way of our body reaction in a demanding situation. So, be ready to prepare for it. It may be difficult for the first time but in the second time is easier to cope with any situation.
