1 Open up your laptops, go to MrHyatt.rocks, and do today’s bellwork
Scale Scale Description 4 Through independent work beyond what was taught in class, you could: investigate the location of seasonal constellations in the local sky. predict location of constellations at future times. determine the celestial equator, latitude and position of the Pole Star for a given position on the Earth. determine the distances of stars in a given constellation to each other and to Earth. 3 You will be able to: describe and apply the coordinate system used to locate objects in the sky. distinguish the various methods of measuring astronomical distances and apply each in appropriate situations. 2 determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other astronomy specific words and phrases as they are used in context to relevant topics label diagrams with degree measurements describe how or why different units of measurement are needed for distances in space 1 You will be able to list the different units of measurement needed to measure distances in space Please take your group answer sheets from yesterday out so I can collect them!

2 Question of the day! What do we use to measure the distances in space?

3 It is bigger than you can possibly imagine!
Space is huge! It is bigger than you can possibly imagine!

4 Stars that seem to be close may actually be very far away from each other.

5 The universe is immense in size
Astronomers use units and methods of measuring that we are not used to on Earth

6 Light Year

7 Units of distance in astronomy
Light years (ly) -- a unit of distance, NOT time Distance that light travels in one year equal to 9,500,000,000,000 kilometers Can also talk about light seconds & light minutes

8 Distances in Astronomy – we use light!
Solar system Light minutes to light hours Milky Way galaxy Nearest stars: light years Galaxy center: tens of thousands of light years Galaxies Nearest big Galaxy: few million light years Most distant galaxies: billions of light years Microwave background: >13 billion light years

9 Parsec A Parsec is used when measuring parallax: a motion of one arcsecond from opposite sides of the Earth’s orbit occurs for an object at one parsec Parsec is used to measure greater distances between stars and galaxies 1 parsec = 3.26 light years Not time!!

10 Parallax is used to measure the distance to nearby stars
Parallax: when objects appear to move or shift due to earth’s orbit This method uses trigonometry nearby stars = 300 light years or less

11 Parallax Jan. draw this June

12 AU is the average distance between the Earth and Sun (1 AU)
Astronomical Units (AUs) measure distances between planets (our solar system) AU is the average distance between the Earth and Sun (1 AU) 1 AU is about 150 million km About 93 million mi

13 draw this 1 AU ? Km ? Lm ? mi Sun E

14 Mercury is the closest at 0.39 AUs while Neptune is the farthest at 30.06 AUs

15 Units of distance in astronomy
Light years (ly) -- a unit of distance, NOT time Distance that light travels in one year equal to 9,500,000,000,000 kilometers Can also talk about light seconds & light minutes Parsecs(pc) 1 parsec = 3.26 light years kiloparsecs (1000 parsecs; kpc) and megaparsecs (1 million parsecs; Mpc) used for sizes of galaxies and distances to galaxies  metric system Astronomical units(AU) One astronomical unit is the average distance between the Earth and the Sun Used only in the solar system

16 60 second summary Answer your question from the beginning of the day!
What do we use to measure the distances in space?

17 Go to google classroom…quick little review

18 Scale Model of the Solar System

19 Exit Ticket (Answer in your science journal in complete sentences)
What was the goal or purpose of the people in making this video? (In other words, why spend all this time and energy when they could just talk about it?)
