Steamboats were used on the Arkansas and Red River First Steamboats were named – Scioto and Velocipede traveled to Fort Gibson in 1827.

Started in Independence, Missouri The Cimarron Route – 60 miles shorter or 10 days. Less Water but went around rough Rocky Mountains. William Becknell – 1821 with horse and mules establish the first route. Sibley Expedition Used the Trail also for transportation of Military Supplies

Places in Oklahoma it passed – Vinita, Salina, Fort Gibson, Perryville, and Boggy Depot Followed the Grand River Originally named – Osage Trace Six stations were located on the route from Baxter Springs, Kansas and Fort Gibson.
