4 Former Pre-College Sequence
Math 034 (Basic Math) Math 067 (Pre-Algebra) Math 097 (Beginning Algebra) Quantitative Reasoning Statistics DONE Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Pre Calc… Unfortunately, the Math 097 prepared our NONSTEM students for the class they were less likely to progress to.

5 Now for the numbers… Frightening national numbers:
60% of incoming students need remediation 55% pass rates at all levels of developmental math Both AMATYC and CCA (Complete College America) are on to this problem and recommend a different approach At WCC, here are three numbers for you: 85%98%56%

6 WCC’s New Math Pathway Summer 2015

7 Timeline

8 Timeline of Implementation
November 2014 AMATYC presentation CCA Proposal to Dean Proposal to Department APPROVED November 25, 2014 Curriculum Committee APPROVED March 19, 2014 Instructor Training with Author April 17, 2015 First Two Sections Spring Summer Term 2015 Full Schedule Nine Sections Fall 2015 Full schedule Nine Sections Winter 2016

9 Role of Advising

10 More Complicated Sequence
Advisors needed to feel very comfortable with the course Advising breakfasts and reminder announcements Sample Lesson, Hands On More “choices” for students = More confusion

11 Film for Pre-Algebra Instructors to show
We all play an advising role now, with lower enrollments and retention being so important Students like and trust their Pre-Algebra teacher Film

13 Role of Course Mentor

14 Course Mentors at WCC Keep syllabi (master and semester) up to date
Perform assessment Get new hires “up to speed” This new class (Pathways) required so much more

15 WANTED Course Mentor: Pathways to Math Literacy
Willing and Enthusiastic Believer That We CAN Do Developmental Differently Tireless Answerer of Questions from All Training Scheduler Experienced Convincer and Assurer, and Hand-holder Supply Orderer, Furniture Arranger; Brunch Host Staffing Mentalist NOW HIRING!!

16 Important Day: Publisher Training

17 Also…keeping up

18 Results: Enrollment Snapshot
CUE: Jaws music Beginning Algebra Enrollments

19 Results: Enrollment Snapshot

20 What? Who? A 30% jump in enrollments at this level of Math
Who: Predominantly from our occupational division, Advanced Technologies/Public Services Careers Who: The most significant predictor is the division in which the student’s declared major falls.  Simply put, students in 094 are much more likely to be enrolled in ATP programs.  Students in 094 are marginally more likely to be younger (borderline significant).

21 Course Content

22 Magnetic Door Sign Four for $19.95!
WELCOME TO MATH 094 “Things are different in here…” Now let’s get to work!

23 Daily Lessons (1-2 per day)
Workbook Style Groups (a must) “Things are different” Productive Struggle Calculators and Computers Group, Class, Group, Individual Bonus: Learning styles and Study and Success Skills Example: that tech assignment that shows the result of different exam grades

24 Portfolio (Shh..homework)
Tech Applications Skills Reflections (Writing)

25 Tech assignments every lesson
Tech assignments every lesson. In three weeks, students progressed from just adding columns of numbers to exponential growth, and this great example: grading scale, dynamic, with a scrollbar for final exam.

26 Let’s dive in…

27 Future Questions

28 Questions Will the “bubble” continue to boost enrollment
Will the follow-on courses (Quantitative Lit and Stats) experience the same bubble? Will pass rates stay comparable? Will graduation rates in affected programs rise? Institutional Research Placement??
