1 Lesson P4 Part 1 ~ Mirrors & Reflection
UNIT 3 ~ PHYSICS Lesson P4 Part 1 ~ Mirrors & Reflection

2 Plane Mirrors A plane mirror is a flat, smooth mirror.
The image is the same distance behind the mirror as you are in front of the mirror. The image will always be the same size as the actual object. The image you actually see is opposite (reversed) from the actual object. Left hand on the object = right hand on the image Right eye winks on the object = left eye winks on the image

3 Plane Mirrors

4 Convex Mirrors A convex mirror curves outwards.
Reflected rays from a convex mirror diverge and do not meet (spread apart).

5 Convex Mirrors Convex mirrors are used in security mirrors and in rear-view & side-view vehicle mirrors. 2 main characteristics: Objects appear to be smaller More objects can be seen than in a plane mirror

6 Concave Mirrors A concave mirror curves inwards (caves go inward!!!).
Concave mirrors are used in spotlights, flashlights, telescopes, & makeup mirrors.

7 Concave Mirrors The light rays bounce off the curved mirror and meet at a single point called the focal point. Light rays coming together at a focal point are converging.

8 Concave Mirrors Distant object  image is small and upside down
The image gets larger as the object gets closer to the focal point Object inside the focal point  image is larger than object and upright
